    Why are people painting palms?

How can sun affect negatively only trunk and not also foliage?
  3. I’m still calling them C lanceolatus. Most fronds have ramenta on the abaxial surface of leaflets and the red fuzz extends slightly up the petiole. But weirdly some other fronds and certain leaflets on each frond don’t have ramenta. The ends of most fronds have leaflets arranged at a very acute angle (C blackii trait) whereas the leaflets closer to the petiole are more flatly arranged. Some fronds have leaflets which are slightly irregularly arranged (C lanceolatus trait) while other fronds are nearly perfectly regularly arranged (C blackii). Figure all that out! 🤣).
  4. The tall ones in the front of the pic are C blackii Tim? Very nice!

    Why are people painting palms?

It is white, latex paint, used to protect plant trunks from sunburn. Like putting on SPF 50 sunscreen when you go to the beach. Very good protection in areas where lifted foliage would allow sun to directly strike a trunk, burning it. aztropic Mesa, Arizona

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

    Why are people painting palms?

Is that just color or lime or color mixed with a kind of fungicide/insecticide?
  10. I have just picked a heap of microspadix seeds from my plants. (red fruit) . The fruit bats are eating all the phoenix roebelini seeds and leaving a huge mess every night.
  11. https://ucanr.edu/sites/default/files/2025-03/Chrysalidocarpus blackii PalmArbor FINAL.pdf C blackii was described from cultivation. It is very similar to C lanceolatus. When I tried to key out my palm bought as C lanceolatus (well actually D lanceolata back in the day), it came out to be about halfway between C lanceolatus and C blackii based on the article🤣. In fact some fronds key out to be C lanceolatus while others on the same stem keyed out to be C lanceolatus!
  12. That’s where you’re decipiens seeds come from, good old California Harry!

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Rhapis is the second palm that I fell in love with, first was Howea then rhapis and finally Chambeyronia. Now there are so many to fall in love with there are no favourites anymore!

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana a couple of nice seedlings!
  17. I am seeing palms getting painted white. Used to be just the lower 2 or so feet, but now I am seeing the paint goes up ha;f way up the trunk (or more). not just palms, but here is a Beaucarnea recurvata and the it's painted from neck to toe. I don't get it, what is the thinking behind this? I have seen folks applying varnish onto the cut leaf bases of Phoenix sylvestris, to give it a "pineapple" look, and now this I don't even know what this is.

    Is this a good price?

This is what you get for $600 in Australia a stunning Geonoma atrovirens. Worth every cent. Consider if you want that $500 palm, look at what it has taken in years and water to grow it, I don’t hesitate to buy a palm I want if you want that palm buy it!
  19. It is a Dypsis . I just had a couple of seeds left from the Decipiens that I put in the container . The Dypsis Blacki are from @DoomsDave. I will know for sure when I pot them , the seeds for the Blacki are different . I couldn’t find the species on Palmpedia so not sure but Dave said they are very special…we’ll see . I did finally get at least one Decipiens sprout. Harry
  20. Just picked up a 7 gallon, 8 foot tall (seedling😄) Colvillea racemosa tree to plant as a commemorative birthday gift. (makes it easier to remember when planted) We already have 2 Royal Poinciana trees that flower every year, so this Madagascar cousin should also be a winner in time, in the Arizona desert... Don't know of any others planted in Arizona, although they are known to grow well in our neighboring California, (but with sporadic flowering) which is the whole point of growing this species. The fall flowers literally will stop people and hummingbirds in their tracks; they are so bright orange! 🤯 aztropic Mesa, Arizona

    Veitchia vitiensis

It's a perfect little palm, love the scale...the first pic in the original post was quite deceptive!
  22. Hey Harry...what does the blackii allude to? Is this a different form of C decipiens??
  23. They poop inside the house here, so I catch them and throw them outside if one gets inside. Never try to hurt them.

A few pics around the garden

You must be in Australia? Queensland?

It’s chamaedorea time in the garden

Not sure how many varieties I have but at least over 20 different varieties!
  26. An easy palm to grow for that cool subtropical to warm subtropical climate. I have dozens of chamaedoreas throughout my garden, they are just that good for the understory.
