Weekend Palm Activity
by PalmatierMeg- 19 replies
- 1.1k views
This past weekend we put in 8-10 hours each day on palmy activities. First of all, we expanded the Caribbean front garden almost to the property line, outlined it in landscape timbers and mulched it. Then we expanded part of the side garden. Because of high wind, we couldn't spray herbicide on the grass, so we just timbered it. Mulch and palms to come later. We also shifted shelving units and I organized potted seedlings on the lanai

Does underwatering small palm make them stronger?
by BS Man about Palms- 24 replies
- 1.1k views
While I have been leaning towards keeping my palms on the drier side for a few years now...(half on purpose, part can't keep up) I heard something this weekend that supports that theory. I spoke with George Sparkman quite a while on Sat and all sorts of things were bantered about. But one statement caught my ear and made perfect sense. Per George "the old timers said that it was better to underwater a house plant (was it all greenhouse plants?) to make the roots bigger. If they get all the water they need, why would they grow any further out to look for some?" This makes my mound planting theory work too. If the mound is dry, they'll grow below to find water in …

world's saddest looking Phoenix canariensis !!!
by Eric in Orlando- 13 replies
- 1.5k views
Last week I was in north FL and spotted this Phoenix canariensis growing at a house in a rural area near Rochelle. This is just south of Gainesville. Probably saw temperatures in the upper teens on multiple nights. Looks to be growing back strongly but looks so stunted right now.

thought it might be interesting to get an idea of the approx time it takes to get some of the more desirable palms to go from seedling to first stage of trunking under ideal conditions in southern california. so for example with proper feeding, watering, good soil conditions etc you can take a Jubaea from seedling to trunking in approx ?? years...... of special interest to me is any of the Dypsis

Washingtonia robusta surgery

Some of you will remember my Washie that got scapled, when a reinforced concrete wall collapsed and struck it a glancing blow. Well, sad to say, it not only developed rot behind the fibres towards the base, but I discovered a couple of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus weevils in there - including a number of insect larvae. I cut away more of the fibrous trunk then sprayed it with nitric acid. It frothed like crazy and will have killed any living insects in there. The larvae were tiny. If you look closely at the wound near the top, you can see a white speck. That's one them appearing after I doused the wounded area. Not necessarily RPW, since the smell in the wet area was obvious…

New Chambeyronia leaf opens !
by Miccles- 34 replies

Hi all - I never get tired of looking at the pictures of a new leaf opening on a Chambeyronia, so it's my pleasure to bring you these shots. I bought this from a local nursery that was closing down (a sadly all-too familiar theme), only trouble was I had to dig it up to take it home. I did that last winter (July), and truth be known it transplanted really well. Since then I have watched the spear grow and grow... and then finally lean to one side..... Then last night.....

Perplexed about my freeze damaged Queens
by Tropic traveler- 10 replies

Newbie to the forum. I have been searching for a place to get my palm tree info & this seems to be the place. I live just south of Silver Springs, Florida {east of Ocala} Which looks to be kinda borderline 8b-9a zone. I have 4 Queens around my pool that seem to have taken this last horrible winter VERY hard. I planted 3 of them as 6 footers in 2003 & they grew quickly, seemingly very healthy with 2 of them making seed 2 years ago. One my sister gave me is a couple years behind but was doing very well, just smaller. The big ones are 25-30 ft now. My problem is the sustained cold we had seems to have really clobbered them this year. Last year they browned out jus…

Jubaea Seed fall
by chris.oz- 2 replies
Each year I check out the local Jubaea in Queens rd for seed. The last couple of years I was too late, because the garden staff had mowed the lawn and scattered/destroyed the seeds. Some of the other Jubs are in very remote places here, too far to drive on the off chance . So its important to estimate closely the date/time the seed is going to fall. Yesterday, I though it was a bit early, because I had in the back of my mind May was the moth of seed fall I was nearby. Bingo. There were about 50 seeds on the ground. But this jub is getting old and has a well defined neck now and there seem to be fewer inflors and fewer seeds than there were …

Cryosophila albida
by mnorell- 1 follower

Of the palms I had put in the ground before this devastatingly cold winter, one was a 7 gallon Cryosophila albida which I ordered bare-root from Florida. It was planted late, in September, near a number of other trial species. As the first light freezes occurred I was having a hard time finding any obvious cold damage on the leaves (though this species is a little difficult to judge for me due to its leaf-coloration)...though it was finally defoliated by the Big Freeze with its 64 hours of continuous freezing, lows of 18.4/19.7/19.8F, highs of about 28F two days in a row, and I think 13 nights consecutive with sub-freezing lows, and of course the continually depressed tem…

Is this Dypsis perrieri?
by BS Man about Palms- 5 replies

I saw this type palm at Palm Mountain many years ago and it looked the same, but most of them were in the really bad soil mix. Anyway, I've looked at some pics on the web, but I am not sure of some things... 1. All the ones I've see lately are "doubles" and unless I missed something, it does not describe this. BUT it says similar to Dypsis moorei which I see as multiples all the time. I got this one at Jungle Music last weekend.

Winter Miracle Palm Survivors
by PalmatierMeg- 6 replies
- 1.5k views
As I posted in another Topic, I lost nearly two dozen palm species this past winter. But the carnage could have been closer to 3 dozen, given all the pulled spears and months of dying leaves. Even in early April I was tabulating the death toll. But when temps finally warmed, lo, palms I had written or nearly written off struggled to make comebacks. I still don't know if all of them will ultimately make it but their "will" to survive inspires. I think they merit some mention. Areca concinna - We made Herculean efforts to protect this little guy, along with the Licuala grandis. The Licuala didn't make it and I was sweating over this Areca, until its green spear began to …

Hi palm freaks, I still have around $100 in my Amazon gift card balance and I was thinking to buy some books about palms. These books seems quite interesting: Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths: Warm-Climate Plants for Cooler Areas - David A. Francko; Timber Press Pocket Guide to Palms (Timber Press Pocket Guides) - Robert Lee Riffle An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms - Robert Lee Riffle Betrock's Cold Hardy Palms by Alan W. Rouge Roots

I moved a Chambey Hookerii only to find a rouge root setting up house in the planter...Now I understand why this palm was getting so fat...But now what? I don't want it to take root in the planter shade area...although I would like to try to help it continue to thrive...I am not ready to plant it...so should I re-pot it and try to save the root or just put down a barrier and leave it alone...the root is pretty stiff and was extended down into the planter over a foot...

Chamaedorea microspadix repair

Last week my husband noticed that the main stem of my Chamaedorea microspadix planted along the seawall had bent over in the high winds. It looked okay otherwise, so he dashed indoors to get his black duct tape. He fashioned a sleeve around the affected stem. Now it stands straight again. Has anyone else used duct tape for on-the-fly palm repairs? Chamaedorea microspadix with duct tape splint

Sick Pigafetta elata
by Peter Pacific- 13 replies

Hi everybody, I have this Pigafetta seedling that's not doing well at all and I need some help. Here's the palm. It grows really fast but the leaves turn brown just as fast. In this picture you can see the new green leaf but at the base of the leaflets it's brown and necrotic. In this shot, three leaves ago, the leaf was grotesquely undersized. I live on the beach so that may be a problem, but this little guy is behind the house far from the surf. The sandy soil is amended with black dirt and cow manure. I have not fertilized in many months thinking this may have been a problem. Please help...all suggestions are welcome. …

Compacted soil
by Orion- 3 replies

I recently planted a Bismarckia Nobilis of about 1 meter and just after starting to dig the hole I got worried about the soil. I digged a hole of about 50 cm deep and after reaching ~35cm it started to become more and more difficult to dig.Soil is not a problem in my property,so this was a big surprise for me at first. I know palms are very tolerant to distinct types of soil, but since this one is an expensive palm and I want it to reach it's full glory,I got a bit worried about the soil type and possible causes to my palm's future height. So,can this be a real problem or am I being super-protective with my Blue? Thanks in advance Just a note:Close to this palm s…
