Dypsis ID
by PalmatierMeg- 4 replies

This very handsome Dypsis seedling lost its ID tag. Based on its appearance I think it belongs to the pembana/cabadae/lanceolata complex. I have smaller seedlings of all 3 which makes the ID even harder. Any ideas? Mystery Dypsis

Dypsis fibrosa

Looking out the kitchen window the other day I was shocked to see two red fronds poking out. So with speedy flip flop transport to the front yard there was my D.fibrosa with new leaves. I planted out the 5 gal at the end of March and really wasn't expecting the red coloring. Missed the description in, 'Riffle', but it was such a nice surprise. Tim

Damaged Bismarckia
by jimbiz- 1 reply

My Bismarckia, which I enclose in a temporary greenhouse every winter, was nevertheless damaged by the recent Big Freeze here in Texas. A few outer leaves, and half the leaf closest to the spears were burned. Everything else seems to be fine. I have sprayed with Daconil twice. However, I have noticed that the emerging spears are 'sweating' - they are wet - anyone have any experience with this? Thinking it is condensation, I opened up another panel to allow for some cross ventilation. I have had this palms since the sumer of 2003 and it is one of the few palms I had that weren't killed outright by the freeze. I will appreciate any help.

QUAKE INFO. ON NEW ZEALAND'S S. ISLAND??
by Phoenix Bob- 4 replies
Am beginning a long-planned tour of the S. Pacific with many stops for the specific purpose of palm investigation. Have also planned four days on the S. Island of NZ. My travel agent has just completely re-routed us away from Chruschurch. I don't know if this is exactly the right place to make this request, but I'm hoping fellow "palmies" on New Zeland's S. Island might be able to offer some personal, accurate info. about the west/southwest areas (Franz Joseph, Mt Cook, Mlford Sound, Queenstown, etc.) regarding general conditions since the "shaker" . I know that the majority of damage was concentrated in and around Christchurch (horrible tragedy!), but I'm wondering…

So intrigued how beefy these Clinos have gotten since planting from 5 gal. 2 1/2 years ago. Looks like they are starting to move upward now rather than outward. The glaucousness of the trunk is so cool.

What palm is this? Cyphophoenix, anyone?
by DoomsDave- 10 replies

Here's a palm, don't remember where or exactly when I got it (I think from KW) and it's been there about three years, slowly growing but doing well. It kind of looks like a Cyphophoenix, somehow. Any thoughts?

Can you over fertilize a palm?
by _Keith- 8 replies
- 5.8k views
I have read many comments about it being very hard to overfertilize a palm. In the past I have used Palm Spikes, and some broadcast chemical ferts, and although most of my palms are quite healthy, I can't help but to believe that I could push more growth. For the last couple of years, I have moved my veggie garden to organic, with outstanding results. So, I have some bags of commericla Composted Chicken Manue headed for the vegetable garden. I am wondering about using one or two bags around every palm, spread thick like mulch. Do you think they can take it, without burn.

clumping butia???
by paulgila- 22 replies
- 2.7k views
the encyclopedia of cultivated palms states that butia is a genus of 8 MOSTLY solitary palms, but i found a butia in la mesa CA that appears to be clumping.does anyone know of a clumping butia species? here are the pix: the palm in question is in the yard of the "hodgson house" in an OLD area of la mesa that is un-officially called eastridge.the house was built in the early teens. the individual trunks all resemble the typical butia, but it does suggest a palm with a clustering habit. the large house has been divided into 6 units. some native stone that was put to good use.

Ken Johnson Trip 1-28-11
by buccaneers37- 10 replies

Ken came by my house on Friday 1/28 to drop off some palms. It was a quite a juggling act to get my yapa off the truck since he had several other large palms to deliver else ware. The yapa was approximately 600lbs. which Ken helped me get in my back yard. The next day was a different story. It seems that, mysteriously, no one is ever around when there is heavy labor! ….So I did it myself. After digging a 4 ½’ x 3 ½’ x 2’ deep hole, I muscled the yapa over to the hole and eased it in, and believe me, it was ALL of 600lbs. I purposely dug the hole large so I would have some wiggle room with the palm as it will be growing (eventually) between some large Live oak branches. …

Dypsis robusta
by PalmatierMeg- 12 replies
- 1.8k views
I have a young Dypsis robusta in a 7g pot. I know they get large. Over the weekend my husband tore an underperforming lemon tree from the northeastcorner of my shade garden. I'd like to plant my D.r. along the edge but I'm worried about subjecting it to FL summer sun. Can anyone tell me: 1. Does this palm tolerate full tropical sun at this age (or any age)? 2. How coldhardy is this palm? The last two winters have been harsh here - lows to 30ish a half dozen times, 28.5 in Jan. 2010. The palm will be exposed to winds from the north and northeast blowing across the vacant lots across the street and next door. 3. How fast does D.r. grow after it is planted?

This winter was the first time I used heavy, agricultural grade frost cloth to protect some palms for the entire winter instead of just throwing blankets over stuff as needed. As spring rapidly approaches I am wondering if I can just pull off the covers or if I need to re-acclimate the palms to full sun. There appears to be good light transmission through the frost cloth, but I am afraid of sunburn.

Palm Tree Suggestions?
by Palmlover- 35 replies
- 2.5k views
Hello, I been planning out my backyard project for the last two years. My intent is to build a Bali style backyard with a pool and lots of nice palm trees. I did buy and plant a few queens, kings, fishtail and pigmy palm in my backyard before the dig of the pool. Makes it easier to have them planted so I do not have to go around the hole to plant a big tree. I live in Huntington Beach, CA and get mostly part shade and sun in my backyard. I do have a good size yard to work with. Any suggestions which other palms will do well along with critique would be appreciated! I have my eyes on a red flame palm and maybe a teddy bear palm. I will post pictures as I progress with m…

After following up on a request from a member I discovered that Invision offers a fully supported add-on for real time Chat. It is now installed, give it a try. Click on the "Chat" tab at the top. It is a free add-on that supports only 5 in the chat room at one time. If it is popular, we can pay extra and provide for 20, 50, 100, 0r 200 at one time. I am not sure how it all works yet, so help me out. I have enabled it for everyone at this time. I have also enabled private chat, and off-line chat. These options may change as we figure it all out.

Exceptionally full-foliaged queen
by fastfeat- 3 replies
OK, second post today of good-looking individuals of mundane species... This fat young queen had more fronds than I'd maybe ever seen. (It was very windy when I shot these; probably even more impressive on a calm day.) This is what you get when you leave fronds on as long as possible (and maybe fertilize a bit...) Remember, God (or whoever) did not design palms with the ability to generate excess fronds just to give tree trimmers a career path...
