Washie and Liv. Chinensis planted late in fall show damage, and even more so, the winds about to blow us away today.  Winds have blown 20-40mph all day.

PricklyPearSATX, Sabal minor isn't terribly fast-growing, but yours looks like it's off to a fine start.

Here, laurel oaks are dumping their leaves and flowering.  Several new palm leaves in the yard, including a nice one on Dypsis "fine leaf", which has been a slow grower.  Dandelions are flowering and seeding.

This isn't a palm picture, but it's seeds are sold through Rare Palm Seeds.  It's called a Beschorneria yucciodes.  Common name:  False Red Agave.

I hardly expected it to bloom this soon.  I bought this last summer.  Native to the Sierra Madre.  Very drought tolerant.  Tall red flower.

(In the background: Texas fried daffodils, another sign of spring in South Texas. )

We don't get dandelions very often in San Antonio.  But got em all the time in Wisconsin.

And this one has nothing to do with palms, but is very much a traditional site in Louisiana this time of year.  The bee was an extra plus

Nice pictures Keith.  Spring really does not have much meaning here.  It has been raining a lot.  And, when the sun comes out it seems like plants go into turbo charge mode.

Don, compared to most of the US we hardly have seasons here.  Many who relocate here miss the distinct Fall, Winter, Spring of the North.

I know from your previous writings you do not miss winter, but does your brain still trigger thoughts at the appropriate months.  I know for me it is the sun angles that start to trigger thoughts of changing seasons long before temperatures actually change.  But you have very little of that as well.  Just curious if something in your head sometimes still says "winter is coming" even though you know it is not.

And Bo, if you read this, I would have the same question for you as well.

In the last few years, the change in season here has been dramatic. It feels like someone flick a switch. In the dry season, around May... all of a sudden... it stops raining, and cool dry air. And the same in October, all of sudden... very hot and humid and sometimes afternoon storm. Yes.. we do know it when it is changing, with or without calendar.

Regards, Ari :)

Keith,

At our latitude you have to be pretty observant to notice a difference in sun angle.  This time of year which is actually southern hemisphere late summer the north side of my fence gets shade and as the sun moves the shade shifts to the south side.  But, even that is not much.  In fact there really is no summer or winter.  There is rain or less rain and hot or less hot.  If it stops raining for a few days the temperature shoots right up to dry season levels, well almost.  That is daytime around 95 F or so.  In the peak of the dry season, September the temperature will hit up to 105 F. The transition to the summer (dry season starts around May hitting the driest in August through October. Obviously this time of year, the rainy season, is the time to plant things in the ground so that they are established by the time the dry season comes.

In answer to your question I have lost any sort of 4 season references to climate.  I remember when I lived in S. Florida that the coming of the winter season was normally a pretty quick change that hit in October when the temperatures dropped, especially in the nights.  I could feel a change.  Here this really does not happen the dry season slides in gently and slides out gently as well.  There is no abrupt change.   To mix things up more I am constantly going back and forth across the equator for work.  A 1 hour plane flight from southern hemisphere to northern hemisphere flips you from wet season to dry season.  When you drive you actually see the weather patterns change as you get close to the equator.  That is about 3 hours north of Manaus.  I guess you could say that the weather here is a lot like your summer all year long.

I don't know if that answers your question and I hope I did not ramble on to much.  I don't think in terms of winter or summer any more in reality.

There is a positive side to seasonal changes and I can remember what they are like.  When I lived in Montana I always enjoyed when the seasons changed and the new one arrived.

There is DEFINITELY a difference in seasons here, lol..... But I will say it hasn't been anywhere near what it was 10 years ago..  This winter has been (relatively) mild as was last winter... We've only gotten snow 2x and it melted the following day... I remember 10 years ago there would be snow on the ground till april...

Keith,

Here are a few winter (if you can call it that) shots from my backyard.  I have sort of a project in progress.  I am in what you may think of as a hole.  The lot is small, but has some good points.

The rain clouds were moving in.
