As I mentioned in the Weather thread, we've had quite a bit of rain over the last couple of days. Went outside to take a few photos and got carried away, so will be posting a few photos of palms in the rain here! :)

First, I went next door to check on Steve's property and took a few photos. These are not just for Steve's benefit (so he can see the progress of his palms) but also to illustrate one of the many great things about growing palms here - you can buy property, plant some palms and then go back to the mainland for X amount of time. When you return, your palms, with 99% certainty, will be larger, and just as important, healthy looking. Steven planted these 3 palms (this post and the next two) exactly five months ago.

First, a Dypsis sp. Orange crush.

And this is the Clinostigma samoense immediately to the left as you come in from Malama Street.

(Taking an hour break or so - will post more photos from our own property when I log in again).

OMG!!! Thank you so much Bo for posting those pics of my palms in the rain! I have been more than a little curious as to there progress and the growth rate is phoenomenal! I'm glad to here were getting loads of rain as well. Looking forward to more pics from your garden also. The number one thing that appealed to me about Leilani Estates other than it's perfect growing climate is it's consistent and abundant rainfall! There are many tropical places that have their wet and dry seasons but Leilani is one of the few places that you can plant palms and put them on autopilot until you can return. We are truly blessed to have such wonderfull neighbors like Bo and Karolyn who have done SO MUCH for us since we bought there. Here are a few before and after pics to show the crazy growth rate in such a short time. See you in less than a month Bo  :D .

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks guys! And Burt, that could ALMOST be here! :D  OK, time for some more photos (and it's still pouring down!). First, two general views from the area we refer to as as "the 5th acre" (for obvious reasons). We bought this acre in June 2001, and all the palms were planted around Sept-Nov 2001. The Neoveitchias were JUST beginning to trunk at that time.

Normally, even after a night with 8-10 inches of rain, we have no standing water. BUT with all the recent rains over the last couple of months (even though January was actually just below average), the ground is completely saturated, and we have standing water in all sorts of places.

Here's another view, also from our "5th acre". L to R: Dypsis carlsmithii, Dypsis decipiens with Bismarckia nobilis and Dypsis madagascariensis in the background, and a small Beccariophoenix sp. "no window" on the right. This is a low spot on the '5th acre" which is why the temporary lake is there!

And the most amazing growth was of coarse on the Clinostigma Samoense ( I like this name better than Warburgii). I planted 7! Thanks again Bo!

Thanks for the pics Bo and Steve!

I'm still hoping to make a move over there one day, so I could enjoy putting all the plants i love in the GROUND with no worries.

Steve,

I'm sure you'll be very pleased to see the progress of your palms when you return. And I know you'll be excited to get more palms in the ground! :)

About the name C. samoense being changed to C. warburgii. I feel the same way, and will continue to use the C. samoense name. It was of course Don Hodel who changed the name (article in Palms some time ago), and the funny thing is that by continuing to use the C. samoense name, I'm actually taking Don's advice. A couple of years ago he was visiting the Big Island and had a slide presentation for the local palm society, HIPS. Someone asked him about all the name changes and his response was: "This is just someone's opinion. You can either accept it, and use the new name, OR decide that you don't want to go along with the change, and continue to use the old name!". And that's what I'm doing - not accepting the name change!! :D
