Howdyall:

After my first arrival in Fort Myers and the beginnings of teh serious south, I shot inland to La Belle, which was about thirty miles away.

It's the county seat of Hendry County, population 30k or so.  A real rural area, butting up against Lake Okeechobee to the east.

I expected a real old-Floridy town, and by crackery (pun intended) I found one.

This trip was, after all, supposed to be quasi-enlightening.

As I roared off inland, I noted some Florida native Zamias being used in the roadway median.

Unlike urban areas, La Belle spread out.  Large lots were the rule.

Compared to the palmalisciosity of Fort Myers, there was a paucity of palms in La Belle.

But not completely.

This lady was a volunteer at the society, and she had lived here all of her life.  SHe didn't tell me how old she was but she remembered the 1950s, so I figured her to be 60 or thereabouts.

(I should live so long and look so good!)

She introduced herself, but I forgot to write down her name.

Oh well.  She knew the place well, having lived there all oher life, and described life in pre-AC summers, as well as how hard it was to heat the high-ceilinged houses when it did get cold.  She remembered that before the Army Corps of Engineers straightened the Coloosahatchee river there was a hand-crank operated drawbridge, which she, along with her playmates, would ride while the span would turn to let boats pass on the river, headed to or from Fort Myers.

She noted that it froze at least once every year, in contrast to nearly frost-free Fort Myers.  

She recommended I get Hoppinjohn at the local cafe.

Sorry if this pic is a bit out of focus -- the light wasn't the greatest, and my learning curve is pretty low with this type of thing.

Anyway, this shows how much space small Florida towns occupy.  Everywhere I went outside the urban areas, there was space to burn.  Unlike Miami, or LA, for that matter, or even Tampa or St. Pete.  Plenty of roam-room.

La Belle also has a large Mexican community.

Quick drive-by of a place to send your money to Mexico.

There were other trappings, too.  Gypsy cabs, cowboy clothing shops, a cantina and a cheap Chinese buffet where I took my lunch.

While palms were scarce in La Belle, shoot to the east to the shores of Lake Okeechobee and you'd be in palm heaven again.

Obviously, water makes a huge difference, even that far south.

You simply would not see a scene like this in La Belle, only a half-hour away.

I'm glad you are getting to see the REAL Florida, not just the Yankee-fied version found along the coasts. Both Northern and Southern Florida Crackers share a common heritage and I fully relate to your pictures. I could go on about how my great grandpappy used to raise "wild" free-range cattle in the North Florida palmetto and piney woods.......but I won't bore you.

Anyway, enjoy the wide open spaces that the interior areas of Florida has to offer.

Dave, I see you took the drive on State Road 80.Great choice in that it takes you through some very interesting territory.La Belle is a little like the Frontier.I remember taking my first deposition as a lawyer in that Courthouse.It is still a beautiful small town.It also can get quite warm there in both the Winter or the Summer.

By the time you hit Clewiston, the land changes and you have hit Cane Country.It is the basis of that part of the States economy and creates a very interesting culture.The East side of the Lake sees very little freezing weather depending how close you are to the water.It is a place altogether unto itself.The Muck soil is the most fertile I have ever seen.Where did you turn?

Thanks Dave.

I had forgot about that dinner, supper thing.  A lot of my relatives back there still call it that.  :)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Yeah, La Belle was the real old-timey deal.

I should have stayed longer, but they had very few palms . .. .

Dave you were very close to my humble abode. I have ate at that Chinese restaurant in the past and it was filling but that was about all.I wish I knew you were so close because you could of stopped by and seen we have royals, coconuts and of coarse sabals galore. I believe your most memorable memories will be labelle  :D and your worst memories might be the sabal palms surrounding it. But hey hope you have a good trip.

I was near-nearby.

I wanted to get onto the web at the little library but they were closed, and, well, I had a Mexican bar to go to and get noisy in, I was on vacation, after all.
