Very nice Randy!  I love the Dypsis...  that palm has quickly become one of my favorite "dainty" palms...  Is it planted in sand?  I was thinking about trnasplanting my only one to my yard at home (why not add one more palm that there isn't space for? :D ), but was a little unsure about the ph and lack of nutrients.

Anyone know how old or how tall Dypsis sp. "Pink Stem" a.k.a. "Pink Crowshaft" a.k.a. "Hawaiian Punch" a.k.a. Dypsis nodifera sp. "New Red Leaf" a.k.a. Neophloga sp "something or other" has to be before it sets viable seed?

Bill,

You can probably get from germination to a seeding plant in about 8 years.

This is my only palm that has any woody trunk forming...  I think that has to do with my love affair here...  It is a fast grower for the most part!  As soon as a new leaf starts to turn green a new spear is on its way out of the crown...

This was about 12 months ago... maybe 12-14" overall height...

This is today! :D

Bill,

I just checked my tallest one. It has 5 ft of trunk and overall height is about 10 ft (up to the top of the new emerging spike), and it is JUST NOW getting ready to open up its very first inflorescence. It's a tiny one, and most definitely won't bear any viable seeds, but based on its current progress, I'd say there might be viable seeds on the tree before the end of 2008. I planted this particular palm in Jan. 2002 from a 2G pot, so my guess is that it was germinated some time in 2000.

Exciting!  Thanks for checking Bo....  I guess I have half a decade at least b4 I see any kind of flowering...  I think I'll just leave her in a pot in case I move out of my townhouse and get somewhere with a yard one day!  Someone else must be growing this palm... Who's got some photos to share!?  gimme.gif

Bill, What are you going to do with all greenery in your shadehouse when they outgrow it? (hint, I need to buy more!) I'd rather buy locally :)   Randy

Randy, I think I have you on my email list... When it's time to sell I will certainly let you know!  It'll be time when the little Teddy's get about to the size of the Big Teddy!  (I'm betting about 18 months from now)
