Seedling price check at Houston Home Depot

While the spring shipments of palms haven't made it to any of the Houston area garden centers yet, there was a large selection of inside stuff I noticed at the Home Depot yesterday.

Picked up this Areca Palm or 'chrysalidocarpus lutescens' at Home Depot for $3.98.  Not bad.

I've seen it also classified as dypsis lutescens.

Hi Kevin,

I noticed your signature, and was reminded of a thread sometime ago that had a pic of Roystonea palms in Houston.  I've always felt theyre the ultimate large tropical palm.  Apparently someone has been successful in Houston's heat and humidity.

Have you tried/ or have the space?  Sorry for getting off your topic.

Dypsis lutescens it is Kevin. That common name of "areca" is also old hat now. "Golden Cane" is becoming more universal as the common name.

It looks like more than the usual number of stems one would have in a pot. I'd be tempted to split it up into two clumps, then that would make it a real bargain.

I concur, split it up and plant away.  I bought one of these similar to what you show posted about 5 years ago.  They are now over 12' tall.

Keep us posted.

Kevin,

From what I understand, you may have a chance with the golden cane palm planted in the ground in Houston.  Have heard it will take temps into the mid twenties F. I would try to place it with some protection if possible. The stories that I hear are that most of the clumping palms have more of a chance of recovering from bad freezes than do the zone borderline single trunk types.

I have Arenga Engleri and Caryota Mitis planted, the Arenga with canopy cover and the Caryota in a good micro climate situation. Will see how they do.

Kevin!

Nice to meet you!

More pics of Hugetown palms are always appreciated.

Split up that little pot of babies, keep them warm and out of the sun and wind till they take.  I'd wait till spring, about March to be sure you won't get a nasty cold spell.

You'll end up with more palms than you know what to do with.  They'll grow a while, till a Blue Norther makes 'em go Norwegian Blue (dead) on you.

But fun in the meantime.

Let's keep our forum fun and friendly.
