Any tips to grow Verschaffeltia Splendida from seeds?

Featured Replies

Hello :) , I have bought 6 seeds of Verschaffeltia from the local e-commerce and perhaps will arrived in a few days. I would be thankful to anyone that could help and maybe some tips on how to grow them from seeds!

Hi there.

Keep them warm and moist, don't overheat and protect them from coldness. The main point is, when repotting them, be careful. I lost a super hopeful one even with being very gentle to its roots - it wasn't enough...

All the best!

Thank you for your reply! @palmfriend Alright I'll try to be careful with the roots! Btw, how much long do i need to soak for the seeds?

Hi,

Soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for three days should do it, if possible change the water daily. After that I usually put them in a pot with peat moss. Some growers spray the seeds with something to avoid mold, I never did.

If the seeds are very fresh, you don't even need to soak them, but that depends on their condition.

Alright, I hope it helps, good luck.

They are very easy to germinate, but lose their viability quite quickly. Keep them moist around ~75-90 and they should sprout within 2-3 weeks. They grow very quickly. The seedlings do not tolerate drying out and are very sensitive to cold and draughts. Don't keep the seedlings in an unnaturally humid environment for too long as they will have difficulty adapting to lower humidity when you remove them from it; maybe this is not much of a problem in Indonesia.

I have found the seedlings rather susceptible to scale, which is near impossible to remove manually due to the spines. Again, you might not have this problem with your climate being more optimal.

I have not managed to kill any due to root disturbance, but perhaps I'm just careful. The roots are shallow when they are small so deep pots are not necessary. Better have a small pot and let the roots fill it before attempting to re-pot.

Alright understood! Thank you very much :)

Plenty of good advice written above, I will say keep them out of the cold weather once germinated. First bit of cold weather they will fry!

Thank you for your info! @PalmsandLiszt Yeah I live in Indonesia so its not a major problem to grow palm trees actually😅, well perhaps the seeds I ordered are not really fresh since probably the seller also bought it from rarepalmseeds.com which takes a lot of time on shippings and storage for the seeds, so maybe it will take months to get the seeds sprouted.

Also for the pot maybe I'll just use the 13cm height it will be fine since you mentioned it with a small pot.

The rest of your info I got it already, once again thank you very much!

Thanks for the reply! @happypalms Yes absolutely, palms really love heat anyways😅, but also don't burn them out in the sun!
