Coconut survival

Featured Replies

This girl dropped all her nuts after this years freezing temperatures. Do you think she will survive?

It will, unless Florida gets another big freeze this winter.

Will it survive? Probably. However, the treasure coast is not quite south enough to guarantee coconut survival long term. Generally, Palm Beach and south is considered to be the safe zone. There are coconuts up here that are “coming back” but honestly they all look bad. The picture is not very clear, but this one doesn’t look great. The fact that it aborted the fruit is a clear indication of stress.

you never know, we might have an extended period of warm winters. The question of will it thrive is another matter.

So I just wait and see? I was concerned the trunk is weak and could land on the house?

I would wait for recovery, your area looks like it doesnt get these cold snaps often. I think your climate is similar to mine on the opposite(west) coast. They do better closer to the coast here. I am 15 miles inland and they took a beating this year around me. I didn't see any dead, just the lower half of the crowns were burnt to a crisp.

This is a standard example of the coconuts around here. Some lackluster growth after a complete freeze. Not enough growth in my opinion but it’s not mine. I think it’s about 20 years old and it also jettisoned all the coconuts it had. I had 3 juvenile Jamaican Talls and I removed them after the event.
