New Butia in a pot

Featured Replies

Hi I just bought this beauty of a Butia in a pot that's way too small for it. It's an 11.5 gallon and I was thinking of potting up to a 20 or 25 gallon. We're in the mid 90s temperature wise for a while here in the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon. I've never had a Butia and was wondering if there was anything I would know before getting started. I was going to plant it but I'm afraid out wet winters would end badly for it. At least with a pot I can pull it under the overhang. with some of the other palms. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Wow , that’s a beauty! I would get that in a bigger pot for sure . My experience with Butia is that they are tough palms . Mine is in the ground and has been in full sun since it was quite young . I think yours will want as much sun as it can get . It may slow down a bit in winter but should be fine with a bit of protection. You may already know this but drainage is key for potted plants . They can handle frequent watering as long as the drainage is good . I put small 1-2” pebbles in the bottom of the pot , then a good sandy loam soil mixed with a bit of perlite or orchid mix, just enough to keep the soil from coagulating. Harry

@Harry’s Palms has it right he’s on the money with this one, i would acclimatise the palm over one winter and then plant it in the ground. If it lives that one winter then it stands a fair chance in the ground.

Thank you so much I really appreciate the advise. I'll re-pot it in the next few days - with the pebbles in the bottom 🙂. Acclimatise it then go for it and plant it. It really is my hope to plant it as I know no palm wants to be in a pot. I watched a few videos of some large Butias that were planted getting their fronds tied up, covered in chicken wire, lights for warmth and then a bag over that. I'm not able to climb ladders and it's just me. That's why I changed to keeping it in a pot. But if there's any chance I could plant it and it'd survive I'd love to do it. Is early spring a good time to plant it? We can go all winter with no snow then get a huge dump of snow in April 😬
