I think it was around 1900. They were immigrant families who created gardens and brought exotic species. There's a nursery that has or imports Rhopalostilis to Chile. I hope they start giving out seeds soon. It only blooms.

The photos below are from the nursery where the Rhopalostilis is located. They import, sell, and propagate them there, but with some seed viability issues.
