Is my Phoenix sylvestris producing dates?

Featured Replies

My female Phoenix sylvestris seems to have around 4 or so green "dates" that have got some size to them. What's odd is that they haven't fallen off yet, unlike most of the green "buds" that fall off when they're not fertilized. I have one other Phoenix sylvestris in my yard that is also a female. I'm not quite sure how this one growing the "dates" would've gotten pollinated (if that's what happened). There is a Phoenix canariensis around a little over 0.2 miles away, but I'm not sure if it's a male. If these are legitimately fertilized dates, would they actually have viable seeds in them?20260604_145951.jpg20260604_150008.jpg20260604_150015.jpg20260604_150025.jpg

@Pee Dee Palms It's setting fruit, but only time will tell if it is fertile. It would be interesting to cut one open and germinate the seed. If they germinate, they were fertile.

I did actually pull off the smallest one and cut it open just to see if anything was in there. The knife sliced right through it, but there was definitely something in the middle. It was a white/tan inner part that was different from the green flesh around it. It seemed to be slightly harder than the flesh too (still could squish it though). Hopefully that was a developing seed.
