SUPER IMPORTANT - MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO PALMTALK

Featured Replies

Here's how it looks from my Laptop ( ..with a few notes )

Straight to the website from a general " Palm Talk " net search in Firefox.. Would have to select dark mode from the options in the lower lefthand corner at the bottom of the page.

IMG_2090.jpg

Duck Duck Go. ( pretty much any website you search for there is instant dark mode, though PT wasn't, for me at least ).

IMG_2096.jpg

Looking around at various site aspects in Dark mode, a few things stand out a bit:

Red lettering for user names, against the dark background? ..tough on the eyes.. Can't look at it for more than a few secs. myself..

IMG_2086.jpg

Maybe changing it to a different color? ...like the bluish green background color of the user ID bubble that draws your eyes right to it. Not so harsh on the eyes, either..

IMG_2097.jpg

Larger, brighter white font stands out better compared to the ...not so bright? font color. Might work better as the standard size brightness for typed font.. if that makes any sense..

IMG_2094.jpg

Coming back to the overall page, Circled = IPS banner looks great, but note how, on my screen at least, the letters kind of disappear into the background.. Maybe a larger font size / banner width?

IMG_2096.jpg

Arrows.. = swap the black tones..

Just some user observational feedback, Don't go floggin me for it, lol..

Thanks for feedback. And yes, we will have to do some customizing to make the Dark Mode better. It will have to wait until we get everything else straightened out. But it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. And changing “little things,” once we get the hang of it, should be simple. Main Logo is a different story. We need to create a completely new graphic on transparently background.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

Everything loads very slowly for me.

I know that profanities are frowned upon here, but 2 seconds in and this looks amazing @PALM MOD

I thought that was already possible. I’m pretty sure I have done it. Anybody know?

It's a crapshoot. I'm old enough to remember when i had to text files to myself because the Mms would shrink the file size because it was too big for the forum...Anyway expletive expletive this expletive looks expletiving amazing sir.

On Brave browser on my Android tablet it also defaulted to dark mode. The greys and colors all look great to me, with just the exception of the orange-red highlight color.

Initially the only thing that bugs me is the default column width. 2/3 of the screen is taken up with a blank right side column with the Donate and Recently Browsing dialog box. So every time I go to a new page I have to zoom in on the actual main column. Previously the right column was there but significantly narrower.

Edit: I meant to type 1/3 of the screen is a big blank column, not 2/3.

I like it, I fully understand what it takes to get something so good, great job team!

Thanks to all involved!

I have not taken the time to fully investigate but what I see so far looks quite good.

Agree with this...the actual user friendly, or usable space has shrunk significantly, to what end? Feels like there's now a lot more space on the right hand side for what...more ads? Skip to recipe!

South Arm, Tasmania, Australia - 42° South

Mild oceanic climate, with coastal exposure.

Summer: 12°C (53°F) average min, to 21°C (70°F) average daily max. Up to 40°C (104°F max) rarely.

Winter: 6°C (43°F) average min, to 13°C (55°F) average daily max. Down to 0°C (32°F) occasionally, some light frost.

The site looks great on my foldable phone. I'll have to check on my PC later.

Thank you for the upgrade, this is great!

I have adjusted that somewhat. I could do a little more, but let’s see how this setting works. Any more and it starts to get a little too narrow on some devices. I have another idea I’m working on to eliminate the sidebar completely when viewing a post, so that the pics will appear bigger without having to expand them if wanting a larger view. Stay tuned.

Note that it will take over a week for all the search features, etc. to re-index. That is very resource intensive.

There will be less than optimum speed and loading times until complete.

I love the new update, yeah the website I guess software was getting quite a but outdated. I have seen other forums with the same ig forum provider or whatever with an updated look so I was wondering why this didn’t have that. Thank you guys for doing this! It looks amazing!

I haven't participated on PT for a while but I was wondering.... did you get rid of the Plants other than Palms section? I always found it super helpful for companion plants in a palm garden. Palm people always seem to have the best advice and knowledge for plants other than palms as well as palms.

It's still there.. Is under the " Tropical Looking Plants ( Other than Palms ) " headline..

I may have to put an announcement for this. Two things are going on.

1) There is a ton of database re-indexing that will be running in the background for days. This is all tied to the Search Feature and anything else that requires search-like activities. So, hopefully it will resolve for most people shortly.

2) For some people, the following will be needed - to reset a legacy bug for some older Users. Go to your User Menu (click your icon - top right). Then click “Mark All Content As Read”

When all indexing is done, this should work again.

Logged in and using iphone, the ad takes up all the space. If logged in prior version, ads were not prominent. This is every time you open a new page or post.

I use an Android, but not the app. I find it noticeably slower to post with the new interface.

Essentially nothing downloads; if I am ever able to open a topic it is frustratingly slow. I assume this will all be corrected in due time. For the moment, I miss Palmtalk.😔

Andy - as discussed above, because of the revolutionary and fundamental change “under the hood” of this new Version upgrade, 20+ years of forum files (posts, photos, etc.) have to be totally re-indexed and/or re-formatted (sometimes multiple times) from scratch. This requires massive server resources. Instead of closing the forum completely for several days, this is running in the background, and causing a slow down (or not loading at all) on anything requiring Search resources, and/or photo intensive topics. Many selective tasks require Searching - simple viewing does not.

Having said that, it appears as if it is more noticeable on slower cell service and phone viewing. On Fiber and my laptop it is noticeable, but thankfully bearable performing most normal tasks.

But unfortunately, this process is only about half over.

Simple normal viewing of topics on other than cell phones should be bearable. Sorry, no way around it.

Sounds like it will resolve itself (with help) over time.

Very slow response times when I reply to any threads. A couple of times it timed out on my iPad. I had to wait a few minutes to resubmit. I like the look of it , but I was happy before. Harry

Its a huge job to bring these changes over all the tens of thousands of posts. The former system search was almost impossible to find 5 years or older threads I remember. It was in bad need of some kind of upgrade as most of the history was not practically accessible by search. The number of contributors has exploded over the last 10 years. I think patience is needed as this kind of an update is a bit of a whale. That said I have noticed Dean that saving a response seems to take 20-30 seconds on windows 11, if that is of any help. I will never be using my iphone to access palmtalk as the screens are too small for me, too much eyestrain.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Just a quick observation. I have always used an android and never had any issues with the site. Right now, everything is soooo slow to update. Whether it's just opening palmtalk or opening anything on the site. Never had an issue before in all the years. Hope this is temporary as you work on the updates.

It would be good to have a list of topics started by me somewhere in my profile info...currently it's not easy to find them unless I've been recently active in them. Unless I'm missing something obvious, which is always pretty likely!

I believe that I recall in the old version that when you receive a notification of someone responding to your post, there was a point at which it also showed you how many points you needed to go to the next level and I don’t know where to see that anymore?

That's always been a little issue for me. The off-topic forums may or may not show up. If I dig deep into my notifications and find a reply to one in there, they appear.

I often open PT using my iPhone and I am happy to see today there is a big improvement in speed of searches, editing, posting, looking for unread content etc.

I know our moderator Palm Mod has been working many hours on our behalf to sort out issues arising after an important upgrade. Thank you!

Anybody else now seeing speeds closer to what we had before the upgrade?

Still loads slowly from time to time on my phone but doing well on my laptop. Overall definitely seeing an improvement on load times as the days go on.

I've noticed that the notifications seem to require a refresh when I am using the site on a PC. I usually use Firefox. Once in a while, I use Chrome if a Firefox update puts things on the fritz.

The next level should be present when you click your profile on a PC. Haven't checked mobile yet.
