Hi all,

In the last few days I have been starting some stock-take and decided it was time to attempt to identify some unknowns as they are now old enough to show some distinctive characteristics. They are all between 10 to 20 inches tall (25 to 50 cm) and more than 2 years old.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jim,

#1 is a Ptychosperma, but not sure of species

#2 I think is Basselinia pancheri, pretty certain

#3 is a Burretiokentia, pretty certain either hapala or vieillardii

#4, not sure, maybe a Heterospathe species.

#5, no idea

#6, looks like a Chamaedorea, too early to tell the species.  If not a Chamaedorea it could be a Synecanthus.

Hope that helps, or at least gets the discussion started.

I shouldn't have sounded so confident on #1.  It definitely could be something else.  Of the palms I've grown, it looks most like a Ptychosperma, but there are lots of more tropical palms I haven't seen as seedlings.

Good help all.

#1 is most likely Hydriastele wendlandiana as I had some seed. The only Ptychosperma that I have tried would be cuneatum and macarthurii.

Also I thought that #4 could be Dypsis fibrosa as I had some seed.

I thought #3 looked kinda like a Veilonia alba.  But if it is Burretiokentia, it for sure is not koegiensis, they show a tristichous shape from any early age.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

#5 Looks like Calyptrocalyx spicatus.

Might be a long shot but #5 might be Bactris Gasipaes (spineless)?????  I'm growing the spined version and pic #5 definitely looks like a spineless version of my seedlings. Although, im pretty sure bactris gasipaes would be larger after two years in your climate.
