I dunno how common this knowledge is, but fire ants can't stand the smell of cedar. They had mounded up all around one of my Trachies and I just snapped a couple twigs off the cedar tree and stuck them in the mound. Now I just have a Trachy covered in dirt.

I notice that after the last rains, they've cleared their nests leaving mounds. Next sunny day I have to dust the nests.

They hate the smell of the cedar oil too. It won't kill them but they'll move and abandon their nest. I've got a tree I need to cut down that's infested with the little demons and I'm ready to just set fire to it. I don't want to get close enough to get bit again. Maybe I break out the sledge.
