This Butia has been through single digits in Dec 2022 plus our recent ice and snow. Suwanee, GA.

    @SeanK Are the two pics of the same butia? They almost look different, I guess the perspective is better in the 2nd pic. I love it!

    Nice looking butia, ever get seeds from it?

    @SeanK There is a beautiful one in Commerce GA with a slick trunk its been there so long. Near downtown on the corner of Elm and College at a nice Victorian home.

    Same palm in both photos. I didn't know Commerce had a downtown square.

    I don't but you can view it on Google streetview, on the corner of Elm and College in Commerce. I used to travel thru there regularly years ago. Probably one of the best looking butias north of the fall line cities, in my opinion.

    Butias are underrated for cold hardiness. I think they are (arguably) more hardy than palmettos.  They are very popular in SE Virginia and piedmont NC - areas that can struggle with palmettos.

    I tried a butia a few years ago and covered it on cold nights. It died but my pot grown palmetto survives to this day. I wish butia were equally as cold hardy as sabal palmetto but it hasn't been my experience. I've killed two butias and pretty much have given up on them. I may try one again. 🤔

    Somewhere I've posted a pic of a local one that's seen single digits, snow and ice. I'm too lazy to dig through all my pictures to find it, but it's beautiful and the owner was absolutely terrifying when I knocked on his door to ask about it. I wanted to go back and get fruit and seeds off of his many Sabals, but this dude isn't into palms and i didn't really feel like taking an asswhoopin so I just admire from a distance now.

    Remind me again which ones are the hardiest? I know they changed names in the past. Maybe I should seek out a hardy survivor as a seed source.  🤔

    I've been meaning to create a thread that asks people to post 8a and lower palms really stand out for being cold tolerant.  There are 'survivor' threads for warmer areas that make for interesting data but don't think there are any for us cooler zoned people.

    Here’s an honorable mention in Oak Island, NC. The area is pretty palm friendly, with wild palmettos and some established Washingtonia and CIDPs. It’s on the Oak Island Golf Course, along with 4-5 others this size. The golf pro seems to think these were planted in the mid 80’s? Approx 7-8 feet of clean trunk.

    Regular odorata is supposed to be the toughest. I like your survivor seed plan. Maybe try one crossed with jubaea? I'd hit up @Scott W or @Bigfish between the two of them they can probably get you on some seeds or seedlings
