New plantings 2026

Time to get some new stuff in the ground. Since all the leaves are starting to push out on the trees I took a little time to put this chinese fan palms in the ground. Decided to go for a shady location since I think they look so good in the shade with elongated leaves. Can't wait to see what this thing does.

Agreed. Gotta take advantage of the fact that we are lucky to live in a part of the US that can grow palms. Unlike you Aussies with your palms everywhere lol

Also, that is where my old dog is buried. That bench is where I go to be close to him

Well that’s true it’s palm city around my garden. 
Love the spot where your dog is, there are many pets in my garden

Your welcome to drop in down under, only problem with Australia is you won’t want to leave. 
Just buy a plane ticket and travel the world, I did that and 27 countries later and I still want to travel! Oh and we got plenty of blue sky’s!

You will love that palm . They grow very well here in Southern California , even in direct sun. Yours is a nice size so the growth will be moderately slow instead of very slow when they are young. I planted a wee baby one and had to wait years for it to get any size . In the last five years or so it has picked up speed . Harry

‘This one gets a bit of shade mixed with direct sun throughout the day . I’ve had it for over 20 years. I planted it towards the bottom of my hill where it is the coldest part of our property in the winter . No problem at all , no fertilizer , just water and sun. Harry

That palm looks great in that spot. Good call with the partial shade. I see a lot around here and they are mostly in full sun. Not as elongated or green. I've had this for probably 3 years in a big cement pot in the sun. It's taken a while to get size, but the trunks are getting fat so im hoping the new leaves stretch out.

Yours is a very nice size . The trunks on these do get pretty fat and after a while , mine self cleaned . Now it has smooth trunk . Harry

Thats nice. I wonder what dictates if it's going to have a smooth or booted trunk? It seems like the climate maybe? Maybe genetics? Because mexican fan palms here can go either way. And I guess that's the case everywhere I've been.

They're definitely in league with Satan.

Don't recommend them as garden companions, very destructive,  although they don't seem to eat palms other than the occasional experimental nibble. They are good for keeping the grass very short though, we call it a marsupial lawn, you can play croquet on it!

There only evil if run them over, and there mates get a set on you, then you’re garden is free rein as a food pantry!

No thanks...a brush turkey stole our marshmallows when we were camping once...shifty buggers!

Sorry @KsLouisiana, I think we've hijacked your thread. The L chinensis looks great, what else have you got ready to go? Do any of the other Livistonas grow down your way? I'm guessing you're deep inside Sabal country.

@KsLouisiana hopefully your zone is not like a freezer and can grow a beautiful garden to sit in and admire, a place for your dog to live in peace and harmony with you. My cat is 19 now and has turned that corner in life having lived in her garden she got me to create for her, I know I have a special palm for her and she can finally grow me a beautiful garden.🌈

Hahaha no worries! I like just sitting back and watching the banter 👀 Yeah I'm in sabal cou try for sure! I have the biggest and most impressive one im in love with. Mexican fans get huge here. Chinese fans. Canary island dates. Sylvester and regular dates are what you see here on the border of zone 9a/b. There are others too so I can make a pretty good jungle look here. 😁 Nothing super tropical though.  But lots of people and the city plant them so its pretty sweet. The woods is full of sabal minors and big sabals along the rivers.

For sure! I just mentioned above all the stuff that I love to grow around here. It's really hard to watch your ani also get old. Like really hard. And losing them feels so wrong because they should live as long as us. But! It feels good to spoil them and give them a great place to spend their lives. I bet your little jungle cat has had it pretty good.
