I’m loving this thread Bodie. I’ve got no plans to plant in the immediate future but have several Sabals that have to go in the ground: miamiensis, mexicana, and minor.

The forecast for the next week is downright spring-like but we have another couple of weeks until we can be much more confident that spring is here to stay.

Thanks! Yeah it definitely can be risky this time of the year. I typically wait for the first week of March to plant stuff, except tender plants I usually wait to plant tender plants until April.

Hopefully you'll get some rain on Tuesday!  We need it here too but not as badly as y'all.

Only palm planting so far is a transplant of this Phoenix reclinata x canariensis that I initially planted in a bad spot.

IMG_20260104_161954213.jpg

Not a palm but I recently planted this Valencia orange that is still flowering even after the freeze.  Ti plants are suffering from transplant shock.

I've got stuff on deck, but historically we always get a nasty cold snap right around Easter. I've got elephant ears, gonna throw the Ti plants into the ground, a big Sabal, a bunch of Sabal sprouts, bananas, hopefully some papayas get big enough by then, and I've got just as much stuff to dig up. I've got 3 DirecTV trees that need to be relocated into the barn and an endless supply of weeds that won't die, and I'll probably have 100 gallons of Bokashi compost to bury by then.

The past couple weeks I have been Growing canna Lilies from seed to keep me busy. This one is a natural hybrid I call it Canna Pink "sunset" I am pretty sure it's a natural hybrid between my pink canna lily and my red banana canna. You can see it has pink/reddish orange flowers And it gets really big! If anyone's interested in this I can probably get them seeds this summer/fall.

None of the Canna I've grown in recent years develop seed / Indian shot. All grown from rhizome divisions.

That's very interesting, all of my canna seed like crazy they come up everywhere in my garden. Maybe it has something to do with your climate? Or the varieties you are growing are sterile hybrids?

Had to build another bench, buy more lights and pots. I'll probably have another update Sunday or Monday. But yep - lol. And all my lights are on smart outlets now, so they're both on timers and I can track power usage. They were surprisingly cheap - I got 4 for like $28. And they work.

This. Cutting the rhizome is the way to go and it guarantees you'll get an exact clone. Seeds are a gamble.

That's typically what I do but growing seeds is always fun and it will be interesting to see what they look like. And if they look like the mother plant.

I dunno. I got some bulbs from the homey @N8ALLRIGHT and the only one I plan to keep is a Pretoria. All of the red ones I just wanna grow them into 1 gallons indoors and sell them off. I don't wanna deal with the caterpillars. If I've just got one I can just blast it with the hose on the reg since with our dry (but somehow humid) summers I'm gonna be watering bananas daily anyway.

Here's a new planting today: Livistona rigida x decora.  Now that it's in full all day sun it should show more red color.  😊  Other palms I will plant this weekend aren't particularly cold hardy...

I've never had a problem with the caterpillars (Except on one plant) at my house And I know it's not just a climate thing  because I have seen other people in my area with them and their Leaves were all chewed up.

I would love to try some Chamaedorea radicalis . I might have a good spot for it.

Right now all my palms are growing in the ground.

I do have an Agave Parryi and an Enchinocactus grussoni in a pot that I'm going to plant in the ground .

Chamaedorea radicalis Is an awesome palm! I have some that I grew from seed. You definitely need to try them. If you would grow them from seed i bet @DoomsDave would send you some seeds for free if he has any that's where I got mine from!

I might be able to help you with the radicalis. I sprouted some seeds last year.

We should talk next week. I will have some time away from work.

I haven't taken a count in a few days but if community pots and tubs count, I have well over 300 living breathing things in there. I'm hoping to get some trades and make a buck or 2.

Lots of gifted stuff, LOOOOOTS of seed, split up a bunch of elephant ears that won't stop pupping, cut up a bunch of philodendrons, aloe vera pupped a few times, I'm propogating a lot from cuttings, when I buy big box store plants I find the ones that have the most pups and cut those up, lots of seed, and I've bought maybe a dozen lol. One of my bananas is pupping again, I'm fixing to cut up another philodendron and probably get 5 or 6 out of it, I've got 3 or 4 more I can cut up soon, and I've got a couple I can't cut up because they're sold. And I may or may not be getting another tissue culture banana, I might be getting a refund.

I just threw some older seeds in baggies - Sabal Bald Head, Sabal Tallifero (sp?), started some more bulbs, some of the Burle Marx philodendron that I JUST split up are already pushing nodes, it's... A lot. You've seen my YouTube lol. It's a lot.

I breed fish, African cichlids. I could produce 1000s of fish a month.  The issue is with the selling, getting that going takes work. I gambled on buying a breeding group of fish, not happy with what I got out of them even through the parents look good. I’ve sold over 100 but have that many left. I’m on the verge of giving them to some stores because I don’t want to spend the money feeding them and I need the tank space for more desirable ones that I’m currently growing up.

Marketing, Selling and developing relationships is the hard part and moving to Texas I’m back to square one.  Don’t want to ship fish.

So that is my advice to you @JohnAndSancho

Here’s a small sample.  Now back to the Palms!

No plantings yet, although my lawn does need cutting. It always greens up and fills out nice in autumn thru winter. I have noticed more drought stricken spots that don't recover like they used to.

Absolutely understood. I've got a plan, I know what'll sell locally and I know what'll go on Etsy. The mail order stuff I want to keep 1g tops because shipping large boxes totally sucks ass. I've tracked historical sales and pricing and think I can be competitive. I still know tons of people in Houston but I don't know if I know any fish people but I'll definitely throw some feelers out there. And I've probably brought this up but there's not much I'd like more than a Three Amigos plate from El Rey with a fish taco.and 2 Cuban tacos. I'm also working on USDA grants to grow tropical fruit indoors since it's hugely unavailable here and I have no issues donating to local food banks which should help me in that regard. Changing to smaller breeds of bananas and sticking with dwarf papayas helps with my space issue in winter.

Mentioning the license and the organic stuff won't be a selling point for the local stuff but it should be for the online sales. But you're right. Getting my name out there is gonna take a little effort competing with bigger sellers, the (lord they're annoying) live sales on Palmstreet, selling on here is cool and I've made a couple bucks and have a couple regulars (and it's wild because a few of the people I've sold to have been on here for almost 20 years and almost never post), but it's not gonna clear this room out. The big stuff and the native stuff is my quick local cash flips, the cheap and steady stuff. The exotics are the bill payers. The palms are the long game, it'll be years before they're sellable for the most part. Sure I'll sell a few on here, and a bunch will end up in the yard. But you're right. The networking and building the customer base is the hard part and economically this probably isn't the ideal time since less and less people are having disposable income so you've got to reach the people that do. 2020 was a long time ago, and you've got to use the right keywords just to get people to see you. Everything is ran by algorithms now and most of them cost a few bucks to keep you from getting sent to the bottom of the list. I'm 2 credits shy of a degree in marketing, I just never got around to finishing it. I definitely stand out around here personality and attire wise, so I've at least got that going for me, and years of working in hospitality taught me how to network (and the PTSD from working for some absolute prick monster owners). If this blows up, I'll have to manage it so I don't get disqualified from SSDI (and that wait and application is a nightmare) and if it doesn't blow up, maybe it covers me and Sancho's prescriptions, maybe I just end up with some cool stuff, maybe I've just become way more knowledgeable in something totally irrelevant to my future. Or if I really wanna get crazy, the marijuana grower license prices have come way down here but then I still run the risk of the DEA even though the state legalized it.

Anyway I'll throw out some fish feelers, El Rey taqueria is legit, and hopefully I can find something around here you'd want in trade for some banana pups in the spring. But not cannas.

@PAPalmtrees Well I took a risk and bought several plants on a major discount in late December. Since the weather was so nice back then I decided to plant them, instead of waiting until spring. I generally don't have good long term luck with potted plants anyways. Well, of course all the extreme cold rolls in around mid January, so I was scrambling around trying to find sheets/blankets and pots to cover them. All in all they look pretty good except for a couple conifers that may not prove to be hardy anyways. Most of the others were camellias, and at 70% off I couldn't resist. A gamble that I probably won't do again, lol, unless I just hold off until spring to plant.

Put it this way. The 3g camellias were $12 and 1g were $5-6. I spent about $100, which is extremely unusual for me to do so in a day or two on plants. But it was a super deal! I still have one more to plant but I will wait and see what the weather looks like soon.

That's a really good deal! I agree a hundred dollars is a lot of money to spend oplant on one day, Whenever I go plant shopping I like to spend as little money as possible lol.
