Record shattering cold in Eastern Carolinas

Recommended Posts

I have a sinking feeling that the prolonged cold here in East central SC is going to kill all 24 of my Pindo palms. I lost many Pindos in 2018 following a similar prolonged cold period.  Accuweather is forecasting record shattering low single digit temps tomorrow night in Florence, Sumter and other towns in the inland coastal plains of the Carolinas.  I'm afraid this is going to be the Carolina's mini version of the Texas Palmageddon event in 2022

I think it’s single digit windchill. The forecasted lows in the low-teens is cold, but should not wipe out a large % of common palms. Im around Raleigh, and we have quite a few pindos around that have regular taken 10-12F.
Hoping for the best for you!  I think your pindos will be ok!

Go to weather.gov that’s the actual info. AccuWeather is a horrible fearmongering company who literally made hurricane forecasts that violated laws. And their forecasts just are really inaccurate. So inaccurate their nickname is Inaccuweather in the weather world. So be careful still use them but be careful when they try to make really bold claims cause they usually lie about it. Could also just be windchill. (Air feels colder to humans than the ACTUAL air temp.

Bigger issue with Butia will be snow or freezing rain in the bud. Cabbage palms tolerate much more adverse weather.

Do you remember the unprecedented snowstorm on the Gulf Coast that brought historic cold last winter? I have yet to see one dead Pindo in southern La or elsewhere in the region. Some were burnt a bit and many others unscathed. Temps fell into the single digits.
