umm,   WOW!  Has he had sucess that way before?  It seems to me, that cutting off all the fronds would not be a good idea!  (except for washy's, they are fairly hardy and fast)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I would not have butchered the growing spear.  He should have tied up all the fronds and built his protection around it.  Or, if he was going to trim fronds off, he should have left the spear in tact, plus a couple other newly emerged fronds.

I have seen a similar method employed here for Phoenix roebelenii.  I guess in the severest of circumstances I might consider it, but it would be a last resort for sure.

I wouldn't cut them off-I thought that was crazy! It almost physically hurt to see that picture..... I tie mine up and then wrap them with heavy frost blankets, and maybe heavy weed block on top of that if it is going down really cold. I wouldn't cut off any leaves until they were dead. It isn't as cold here as there, I don't think-but I didn't see where he was. I can't leave mine bundled up all winter either-it gets too warm here too often.

If you have to butcher your palm like this to get it thru one winter, then I suggest planting a little hardier palm such as Trachycarpus or Sabal.

Here is how fast they recover:

Robusta

I'm thinking about trying one of these but I have to drive south to find a nice sized one.

I can see the cuts and recovery in Feb. I just thought Dec/Jan is a bit early.  Maybe thinking California slow warm up...

Hello, all...

I just signed up on this forum because of this thread... I have thought about getting on this board before but thought I have nothing to contribute.  I am the "crazy, insane, etc." guy that does this to his washy in SE TN.  I also have quite a few other palms in my backyard.  Trachys, minors, needles, palmetto.  I even have a potted 14' Queenie...  I also like to mess with other tropical and tropical looking plants like nanners, ee's, gingers, hibicus, brugs, etc.

If you would like to see what I have done to my backyard over the past 3 years, here is a link to my photobucket account:

http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n225/randy4ut/

The first page is where I download pics and then move them to subfolders which are listed on the left hand side of the page.  Hope you enjoy.  Ain't easy in TN, but it can and is being done!!!

I know some of you already know me from other boards, but I wanted to intro myself to those who don't know the name....

nICE TO MEET YOU!

Ahem.

Insanity, as you will come to see, is NOT a problem here, so long as it's palm-related.

Give us the 411 on yourself and garden?

Hello Dave,

I tried to locate a place on this site that I could intro myself, but was unable to find it, so I guess here is as good a place as any...  Like my post earlier stated I am growing palms, bananas, gingers, brugs, hibiscus and quite a few other tropical plants.  I have been into this for about 3 years now, ever since my family and I moved into our current house.  The house had a pool with no landscaping which was fine with me because I have always enjoyed gardening.  Anyway, after 3 years and alot of sweat, it is finally starting to look like I had hoped.  Not saying I am done, who is ever done???  That is what I think the beauty of gardening is all about.  Your yard is always changing and evolving.  Well, I hope you get a chance to take a look at my pics from the link I posted earlier.
