Should i be worried

It's looking like we're gonna get one heck of a cold wave this weekend on the east coast, I'm wondering should i worried for my Windmill and Sabal Minor ?

Looking bad already several days below freezing and ultimate low of 9F, Neither of the palms are very old either both were planted in 2023.

They should be decently established they were planted in 2023... so about full 2 growing seasons on them

If those were in my care, to reduce the risk of damage, I'd tuck some dry burlap (insulation) into the crown and use bungie cords to gather the fronds tight against the growing spears. They may be just fine with out this but that 9°F night looks dicey. Once the weather breaks and stabilizes to more favorable conditions, remove the protection.

Thank you for the advice and the compliments, The trachy is a favorite of my family ( and anyone who stops by ) and i'd hate to see it go.

Probably should dry cover and or heat the windmill a bit.   Minor is ok.  I just posted a vid on ways to protect

Agree with Allen. The minor will be fine, even if it takes a little damage. The only reason to cover it would be to try to prevent it being slowed down at all in the spring because of losing fronds to cold. (Though it may sail through 9F just fine)

The windmill will almost certainly benefit from protection. I will defer to Allen on the best ways to protect it. If you check out his video I am sure you will find a way that works for you.

I'm not really sure why I provided the info I did. You're in a much different region than I am, and my advice was inadequate for your situation.

I would cover them just to be safe . They are still young and could be damaged . Crown damage could set them back and they are small enough to be able to cover with a plastic can or wooden box with incandescent lights inside for warmth. Harry

We're looking at the potential for ice. That should clear out any remaining Butias.

Really watch out yall, id say if your anywhere in alabama really prepare. Models can be extremly wrong especially this far out. dont take what i say literal and what will happen. but models are calling for -10F in Huntsville AL.. and 10F in Columbus OH. This weather system is very weird. now Icing is the main threat with this winter system. Like i said far out i will not give you a number becaus ei dont wanna cause panic but this could very well be a catastrophic event with Icing especially in Texas. Watch your Local NWS office forecast this is gonna be one heck of a test for your palms. P.S. This is a blend ofmodels so its a bit more accurate but do not take anything with numbers seriously. the icing part though is what people should be worried about.

sabal minor will be fine. because it's gotten a lot worse i with cover up the windmill Palm with heat. also where exactly are you in nc?

I checked the latest from NOAA and it's lookin' rather ominous from Texas to Georgia and up into the NE.

Our regional last bad event was in the winter of 2008-'09. We got a steady diet of cold for nearly 2 weeks were there was a one night drop to 6.8°F or -14°C.

At least these guys/gals are getting some good advanced warning.

Lawn/leaf 30 gal. paper bags are best to protect small palms. They protect from cold and wind. Large palms: wrap them in whatever you can, old blankets, large cardboard boxes, etc Avoid  unbreathable plastic.
