BRAINSTORM - What’s possible for the next generation of IPS Journal?

https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/82089-data-base-for-the-journal/

This thread touched on parts of what I've thought would be a good discussion for the new year.

I come here as a new guy to the societies (couple years) but 20 years ago I first germinated Canary Island Date palms in an unused reptile tank in a closet. Hit the hobby brakes with baby twins  I am 55 this year and have teenagers so always looking ahead. Thinking of advancing the hobby for the next generations that we wish to care for our mature palms.  The Palms Journal may have outlived its life as a paper -borne identity but it’s evolved a little bit. Time for the next steps sooner or later right?  I was on social media only for business purposes and wishing to cheerlead for palms and found no ‘Palm Tree Day”. I tried on my own on March 26 for 4 years in a row until IPS announced in 2023 International Palm Tree Day.  I abandoned my efforts as this caught my attention and sparked my joining the crew here (as well as CFPACS and South Florida Palm Society). I hope my mission sparked someone in the IPS.  Hopefully this discussion can advance how this wealth of information over decades can be usefully spread to anyone who wants to follow this interest. It would honor the folks who took the time to travel, research, and document their findings.  I personally listen to a lot of podcasts so I’ll start with one idea of having podcasts created which can either be individual travel type episodes or compilations where parts of topics are merged from over decades to create some really inventive and engaging content.

I grew up preinternet and iPhone but certainly love their use in improving our lives. Certainly there are tools to help get this done?  I look forward to sharing my energy and enthusiasm where my skills can help,

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Hello Pete -- Could you check the link you included at the top of your message? I tried it a few times and it leads to the profile page for Phoenikakias, not a discussion. If you could link the actual discussion it would help in understanding the main focus of your message.

As for podcasts -- it's not quite that, but look up the International Palm Society on YouTube where you will find several excellent recordings of webcasts.

Naive me didn’t initially think of intellectual property legalities, by-laws of the orginization etc.   Just would be great for the expansion of palm knowledge to better release whats been learned into modern media world

IPS site on YouTube doesn’t include many of the webinars that CFPACS has linked so they  are hard to find. This may end up being a good source of revenue for preservation ?

@PalmBossTampa It does look like you might have gotten the link for the poster rather than the thread.  I took the liberty to correct it in your post.

All: For the podcasts mentioned, we've linked them on the CFPACS site on our Publications page:

The Webinar I did back in February 2021 is the third link down IPS Webinar - A Blank Slate to Flourishing Palm Garden.  All of them were great from my point of view, but some of them are not searchable.  In addition to webinars, all of the CFPACS publications back to 1990 are posted for everyone to enjoy.

Hope this helps.

Thanks @kinzyjr! Shouldn't more of these be on the IPS website? I was surprised I couldn't find the webinars there. Maybe they are there and I just didn't find them?

I think I was able to search the site after I logged in and find these webinars, but it took me a while to dig them all up.  I had some of the URLs in my email since I attended them.  A few of them are unlisted on the IPS channel on YouTube.  Mine was one of them, possibly because I'm not a credentialed expert.

Podcasts sound like a great idea, especially for travel stories and old research that newer people might never find otherwise.

That’s my thought too. Some times of the year i have (or make) the free time to search species in PALMS backlog and there’s SOOOOOO much good info there i get lost in it. I’m picturing the articles as being voiced over and one could listen to Volume 69(3) and it could be played via podcast to anyone with a cell phone.

Going through latest issue there could be the PALM NEWS - i see 4 short paragraphs well written, so easily voiced.

then there are the very nice articles that i always appreciate when i get the chance to read them. I do like to read paper rather than online.

Would these authors be willing to record a reading?

With broader access to the world’s palm knowledge i feel there will be an increase in interest. A certain percentage of those interested get VERY interested and in fact make palms , their study, and conservation a life’s work.  We do need to begin building the base of palm hobbyist who will continue this endeavor past the next generation or two.  We are certainly in a world of change and i dont feel that knowledge should be behind a paywall.   I think there should be more outreach to the landscape community.  I was a landscape design/build contractor for 20 years in Florida and I dont think i ever was exposed to the IPS or local chapters. These are the growers and installers of the vast majority of palms planted in our state, and a potential source of additional membership.  I dont mind paying membership to this or any palm society, but i feel there is a greater opportunity to grow the society/societies if this information is made more available.

See above discussion RE: YouTube webinars. Why can’t these all be on IPS channel collecting views?  They should be edited in their introductions for brevity but they are great! I have watched Palms of Columbia, Palms of Vietnam, and Palms of Cuba multiple times.

Anyone out there with podcast production expertise? Agree that there’s a great untapped potential for quality palm tree content?

Not sure if there needs to be a group of young folks who voice for their generation, and we listen to see what may work?

IPS ambassadors?  Apply to become one of 50 worldwide ambassadors under 25 years old? There should be an open discussion involving the youth .

CFPACS meeting have been fun and engaging for me and my teens attend. There is a good vibe where we understand folks are at different stages of the hobby and it’s NOT a highly scientific venture.  I feel the IPS can evolve in a way that allows some directional ideas from the younger crowd.  We can practice what we preach on the local level in the meantime.

I look forward to ideas that may further this group and palm communities into the future. Dang it closer to 2030 than 2020 now!
