Hello. I purchased a palm awhile back, the seller said it was a windmill. I dont think that was accurate. Im trying to figure out what it actually is. Its about 5-6 years old right now, about 6' tall. Im leaning towards either Mexican or California fan palm, however not sure how to tell at this age. If it is in fact a mexican fan palm, I think i will remove it as i dont want a tree that will get that tall in my backyard. Any help is appreciated

It's likely a Washingtonia hybrid between the two but it's definitely leaning towards robusta (Mexican Fan) with the red color on the petiole bases plus the dark color and nasty thorns.  It'll be a telephone pole soon enough if left there to grow!  😆

Thanks Fusca, the red/purple bases and dark spikes are definitely evident. It was throwing me off because there are tons of fibers on the leaves, however you are probably correct in that its somewhat of a hybrid

Yes , Washingtonia Robusta , possibly hybrid . They get big in a hurry! I have gotten rid of most of the volunteers I get in my yard . I have one that is reaching for the heavens . It is my token naturalized palm. HarryIMG_4158.thumb.jpeg.587428c05fa2a54ff6b9c3ef22eb47f3.jpeg

I put it down towards the bottom of my hill. IMG_1140.thumb.jpeg.b6e13b5f7892e7ae1a02cad5b71db4b8.jpeg
