Do I need to add heating to my Needle Palm (in a winter box) in 6b

Featured Replies

Hello,

My 7-gallon needle palm was planted last summer and it's currently in a fully enclosed winter box, with an additional layer of mulch.

Should I add heating to it, living in 6b (close to 7a)? Last winter the lowest temperature was -12C (10.5F), and this winter we've already seen -10C (14F).

Kind regards,
Pavel

Planted palms: Sabal minor, W. Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm, my favourite!), Windmill, Pindo, Needle, European Fan, Sago palm, Saw Palmetto, Pygmy Date palm

Inside during winter: Majesty, Cat palm, Chinese fan palm, Mexican Fan palm

Which summer is last summer? 2025?

Yes, 2025, I think it was June.

Pavel,

I now have 7 needle palms in my yard, 5 are planted in the ground and 2 are in pots on each side of my front door.  I just bought 2 more that I will be giving my SIL for her yard as a gift.  I have never covered or protected mine.  Although I'm in Zone 8, we've had some very cold spells in the fast few years and they've been unscathed.  You mentioned last winter the lowest temperature was -12C (10.5F) and you've already seen -10C (14F) this year.  I'm wondering how long you experienced those temperatures.  Where in your yard is it planted?  Somewhere protected?  How are all your other palms planted in the ground protected?  I think you having it boxed in and covered with mulch would be sufficient, but again, how long did you have those low temps?

Hi @Toddmin
All palms are protected with fully enclosed winter boxes which I just sometimes ventilate a little bit + mulch + heating for all palms except the Needle.

We could/can have stable low temperatures, but the LOWEST temperatures (ones mentioned in my post) did not stay for longer than 1 night at a time.

Nice day today so I thought I'd snap a pic of my Needle palm. Top down view.
