What's growing up in Fresno

It's been a bit since I posted any photos, figured I'd share a few today since I spent some time cleaning up the yard. Our city's trash service does a once-a-year trash haul where you can dispose of as much green waste as you can pile out in front of your house along the street. It's the perfect opportunity to tidy things up, and convenient in that it's also when sunlight becomes a rare commodity with the low angle of the sun, so pruning (sorry, overpruning) overhead palms like my phoenix and syagrus is permissable 😆

Cycas revoluta x deboaensis up front. Ravenea glauca in the tall pot, sabal mauritiformis in the center back, and beccariophoenix alfredii to its left.

Sabal mauritiformis, and the culprit that is causing those chunks of leaves to be missing.

This week I also swung by Dave's fantastic garden in La Habra. A few shots from that visit. Thanks for the good time Dave!

Of course, I couldn't leave without a few goodies. Here's the lineup:

Archontophoenix maxima with the copper leaf genes

From left to right: an oddball Chrysalidocarpus lutescens, wallichia disticha (in the tall liner), a syagrus (either oleracea or picrophylla), bismarckia nobilis & Gaussia gomez-pompae.

A better look at the gaussia, and roystonea. The smaller palm is a chambeyronia.

Of course, I picked up a few mangoes, which have become my most recent addiction lol they are Sugar Loaf, Harvest Moon and Sweet Tart.

Finally, what seems like the last plumeria of the season at my place: Kaneohe Sunburst

Hello Josue
I think in a few years your garden will become a jungle.

I've seen other photos of Josue's garden and it's already a jungle!  😀  More importantly, unlike mine, it's colorful and well thought out.  Dave's jungle is pretty impressive!

The Beccariophoenix Alfredii is looking flawless at the moment. I'm also thinking I missed an opportunity by skipping out on a Ravenea Glauca a while back. Those look beautiful...

Wow, what a collection! Everything looks so healthy and lush as well! This is basically my dream garden!

I am also into mangoes lately but realistically only the hardiest may have a slim chance in my garden, so I got a Palmer, which is a dwarf variety that can produce fruit in a pot.

That Archontophoenix maxima.. wow, what a stunner! 😬

@Josue Diaz I'm going to have to make a visit one of these days.. Your garden is looking so good. How's the Brahea Super Silver? I have a small one and it's not in a permanent location yet, so it's not the happiest. That mango is perfect too... wow!

Everything is watered really well using timers and driplines and sprinklers. The plants that requires more water (for example the beccariophoenix) have their own bubblers. All a mish-mash of pipes and emitters that has evolved over time. Efficient? Maybe not as efficient as it could be. But functional? yes.

You know, I'm in a 9b zone officially, but many years I don't go below 30F. Of course, we get some frost, but mangoes seem to do just fine within this temperature range. And they can handle frost without any serious issues. Same with plumerias. I started planting plumerias and mangoes after seeing some very large (20 foot tall) mango trees and some 10 foot plumeria plants doing great at a property near mine. I've been growing mangoes for about 5 years now and I've had fruit the last 3 years. Very few at first, but over 50 fruits this year! I have Manila, Keitt, Valencia Pride, Maha Chanok, M-4, St Maui & now these three recent additions (Sweet Tart, Sugar Loaf, and Harvest Moon).

Yes! just shoot me a message and come on down! My yard is small, but you're definitely welcome to see what's growing.

My super silver is here on the right hand side. It's the only blueish/silver leaf in the picture. It's a beautiful palm. I always have to trim leaves because they get in the way of opening our car doors, otherwise, it would have a more rounded/fuller crown.

Just checked the weather forecast. It's quite colder in Fresno than here right now, like 5-10 degrees colder. Yet my plumeria is falling to sleep while yours are blooming! You must be doing something right!

How many hours do you spend gardening every day?

They have started to drop leaves, but they will hold on to leaves until January at least. By February, they will be leafless. This is my last bloom, it will likely fall off soon. The photos above are from the summer months.

Mine too. We aren’t as cold as you are but pretty much the same seasonal temperament with my Plumeria. Harry
