Anybody knowledgeable on propane, specifically heaters? I guess Reddit should really be my first step but I trust most of y'all.

Anyway I'm using an old propane heater to keep my grow room warm. A) it doesn't have an actual thermostat and b) the pilot light likes to go out. I've looked at replacing it, but even the new heaters that say they have a thermostat only have a knob, and the pilot light issue is probably due to age and sitting unused for god knows how many years. I really don't want to go electric due to the increased power bills. I've read I can get a thermostat similar to what's on my heat mats and wire that into a solenoid valve, but a) I'm kind of an idiot and b) I also don't want to inadvertently cause an explosion. I've made it 47 years without causing any explosions or unintentional fires and I'd like to keep that streak going.

Doesnt have a thermostat, but the portable buddy heater is quite effective. Has a low and high setting. You can even attach the 20 lb cylinders as long as the tank stays outside. Using a 20 lb for this is cheaper than buying those disposable 1 lb cylinders. You can take your 20 lb cylinders to you local ACE hardware and get them refilled onsite (if they have the big ass propane tank) for cheaper than doing an exchange at a convenience store. These heaters run about $80-$90 down here, but definitely worth it in the long run.

I used two of those heaters last winter with 2 desk fans inside my makeshift pop up greenhouse (built from 3 mm painters plastic and PVC pipe) and my banana plants survived with pretty minor cold burn. It got below 32F inside for about 10 minutes thru the entirety of winter, and that happened right after the snowstorm when it was 12F outside the structure.

Would highly recommend doing research on the different ones available and what meets your specific needs, write it down on paper so you dont have to try to remember all the details of each one. Thats the best way to find what youre looking for.

We have a giant tank on the property running to the house so easy peasy remove and replace. I would love the idea of an actual thermostat but it seems like that's just not an option. But good looking out.
