Dana Point “Old Man Palm” 20 Years On Now

Featured Replies

This was a small 1 gallon palm I bought from Jeff Searle in 2006.  Keeps on moving albeit slowly.  30” of trunk now.

I don’t have one but wish I did. Crazy it’s been around that long and only that size. Looks cool.

Looks like a option for smaller gardens if space is an issue.

Very cool “ Cousin It “ looking trunk. Slow like my Cocothrinax . I have come to appreciate the slower growing palms , never have to pay for tree service for trimming! Harry

Looks nice. I really like slow growing palms more as I get older. No ladder required for maintenance and crowns at eye level. What’s not to like?

For the past 5 years, someone has maintained a Craigslist ad for one about the size of yours asking $1,750.  No price change so far but I can update if there is any movement on that.:..

A very COOL palm indeed... and showcased beautifully in that spot.

This palm was so hard to obtain (at a larger size) that I talked my husband into driving to Arizona to pick three up. Sadly one died, but the remaining two are doing well. Hoping to find a spot as nice as yours for them.

OMG , @iDesign that is so cool Cousin It! The first thing I thought when I saw this thread, if that were my palm , I would put a set of Ray Bans on it. 😎Harry

Unwritten rule… If someone posts an old man palm on this forum, it risks getting sunglasses.

Cycads are also at risk. From previous posts…

Don’t quite know why… just happens sometimes. 🕶️

But yeah… old man palms need them the most. And the one in this thread is stunning.

Ha! Beat you to it Stacey.

Unfortunately, mine from that imported batch didn't make it. 🤷‍♂️ That was a one and done import, and that nursery has not imported anything exotic since.

Yeah, it was a bummer that most of that batch didn’t survive. Thank you again for helping me get them! Are my two the only known survivors? Re-posting the “funeral” pic of the one I lost…

I think Rudy in Yuma,AZ had a survivor and 96720 here in Phoenix had 1 out of 2 survive. Nursery only brought in 18 plants total, and they sold out quickly.

Sorry , I don’t have an Old Man Palm , will this do?

Guess they lot faster here on O`ahu.  Have not taken a photo since 2019.  It's about 9' tall.

Ended up replacing it with a Coccothrinax miraguama that I grew from seed that's doing wonderfully. Plants started from seed in your current growing location and conditions often seem to do much better than a Florida import, when planted out into your garden.
