Thanks @Allen It is getting closer ro that season again. I've erected a shelter mainly because November is a very rainy month for the PNW.

I saw your name pop up and I remembered I haven't watched your latest video yet and there it is - my in ground stuff is tiny so I think I can still wing it without getting too crazy, everything else is already nice and cozy in the grow room. Since I cut the heater on, the lowest I've let it get in there is 68.

Wow. Looks like I'd find it on IKEA

Welp welp welp.

I was gonna buy some cuttings next week, since we were supposed to be cold THIS week, and now next week we're gonna see our first freeze and then I saw a low of 24 on there. Already? Anyway in the ground I've got a couple Filibusta, a Filifera (that I'm convinced is definitely gonna die this winter regardless of what I do), a Trachy fortunei, a Trachy waggy x princeps, and baby Etonia and Birmingham and a ~1g Bermudana, all are little guys. I guess the good thing is everyone has protection either from canopy or being on the south/East sides of the house, and the best I can do is cover stuff with styrofoam boxes and buckets. If we're getting this in November I hate to see what February looks like. So much for that mild winter they told us about, eh?

Oh yeah, November is the big expenses time of the year! I will also buy some big black water containers and put them around the palms, so they absorb and then radiate solar heat.

My main issue though is a waterproof electric cord that's long enough to reach those plants far away from the house (the furthest away is 25 metres or 80 feet), so I can use the incandescence lights. I can find some but they are super dear and I don't wanna spend 70 dollars per tree just for the cord.

I built that shelter so it can be taken down or set up relatively easy. It takes about 15 or 20 minutes and also includes 4 insulated panels. The size isn't recommended for colder climates, but it works fine for our winters. The roof is hinged and can be opened on milder days.

Serious question but we're only forecast to get a low of 24 here and I've only got seedlings in the ground. Should I be ok with covering them with Styrofoam boxes and/or buckets and mulching around the bases? I've got some pine mulch and I've also got a massive pile of dried out weeds and leaves that I just haven't gotten around to turning into an actual compost pile.

I guess I should also be aware that every time it's been forecast to be "not that bad" it's freaking horrible.

24 shouldn't affect them John.  I've had trachycarpus and sabal in pots out in those temps. They were fine

I'm assuming that during the day it's above freezing.

Throw a bucket over them, weight it down with a brick or rock. Sleep

Take bucket off in the morning.

You'll rest easier if you do but I think all of them will be fine

Yeah. We're not forecast to get tons of precipitation or anything, just cold. And everything is either protected by canopy or the house, and it's all facing south or east and we're not getting crazy winds. When we get wild temperature swings like this it usually comes with lots of storms and we're not forecast for like hours of subfreezing either, just a blip.
