Not to sure apparently it stays quite warm with all that thermal mas. The one person who could answer your question is @palmtreesforpleasure. One would think never below 5 degrees Celsius.

It’s pretty amazing, it just goes to show, plant them first and worry about if it lives later on. You just need access to the that amount of variety’s. The microclimate that has been created is perfect.

Sydney BG started off as one of the first if not the first vegetable garden/farm in Australia supplying vegetables to the new colony there at Sydney Cove. No doubt they chose it because of the water supply there with the creek running through it. From there it became more ornamental and transformed into the botanic garden it is today. They’re very lucky to have a very well protected and mild climate where it is. The perfect location and I couldn’t imagine Sydney without it.

It’s only getting better the gardens. They still have that vegetable garden in there as a reminder of the past!

Royal botanic gardens in Sydney does not get below 7c, Wollongong botanic is slightly warmer. The difference is the thermal mass of the city building so it warms up quicker and retains heat longer. Planted the first palms in 2010 so the majority of palms thete have only been there 15 years. The growth from the city building heats the garden which i guess is the reason for the faster than ever expected growth rate.

The collection is worth the visit, just when you think you have seen every species you need to look closer🙂

There you go Richard 🙂

I knew that would get the brains trust going in you, the old saying use it or lose it, you still got it 🤣 we need such gentleman as yourself keeping us young whipper snappers in check. Otherwise we would run amuck planting palms all over the place. Thanks Colin.

The photo of the group of Burretiokentia hapals floored me!

The amount of flowers on them was incredible. I can see why they call it the dreadlock palm, absolutely covered in dreads!
