"Plant it facing south" (Northern hemisphere) Why does it matter?

I have had this question for some time already, why do people recommend it? Just curious.

It allows for maximum exposure to the sun. When I was zone pushing a palm in my last garden, I planted it on the south facing side of my home. The stucco would reflect a lot of heat, which in theory would help with growth and give off some warmth later into the night, to keep it warmer than if it were on the north side of the house.

Winter winds come from the north and west, plus the sun exposure thing.

Bc of the tilt of the sun, during winter it is likely that a north facing plant might be in full shade for months on end. Some are okay with that, but many plants are not. That ones that don’t mind might surprise you. I encountered this issue a lot because my place is sandwiched between lots of tall buildings and I’m at 32.7 latitude

And in some cases the plants can get too much sun and or heat on the South side..
