They hate root disturbance and definitely dont let the community pot grow long in the tooth or else youll loose them all on potting up. Ive more than a few community pots full of Oraniopsis that are destined to the compost heap in the sky.

Kris, wonder whether you could cut the bottoms out and plant the lot? Something might survive...might get an interesting group.

The good old plumosa aka fakey ambositrae I had my palm set a few seeds so I thought I might well plant them a tough palm quite fast growing time will tell how these ones germinate nothing special in the way I germinate them just in a warm hothouse for this batch

True, i did that recently. Planted an entire pot of B.hapala that were too far gone. I’ll let 1-2 prevail and cull the rest. Also have a pot Bismarcks same situation. Bit tragic really !

A few gracilis seeds from RPS it will be interesting to germinate this little palm it does grow in my climate having one in my garden for 23 years having survived many climatic conditions tolerant of cool weather see how I go with this batch of seeds.

I was lucky enough to get my little cultivation fingers on a few different varieties I went with one large styrofoam box with a divider for all the mixed varieties and one clear plastic container coco coir perlite mix bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius should see a few of them germinate in a couple of months.

Yes Colin was keen on them germinating for me two varieties even better I will be sending him some chameadorea adscedans seeds in return we need more people germinating seeds it’s an art form providing the seeds are viable to start with I will give it my best to germinate them I thank my grandmother for my gardening skills she could grow a dead stick and y y  looks of the photo my great grandmother was a helping hand in my grandmother’s growing ability so a long family history of palms.

Nothing special in the photo department but a different technique used this time a community pot in a plastic bag on a heat mat set at 30 degrees Celsius coco coir perlite mixture a couple of months they should be starting to sprout an easy palm to grow just put them in and they germinate easy.

Time to sow a few seeds with the warm weather approaching now sow the time. Taking advantage of the air temperatures to help with germinating some seeds. Bottom heating will be used for of the more rarer varieties and some I will put in the hothouse the easy germinating ones like the Johannesteijsmannia the Caryota obtusa and the chambeyronia macrocarpa seeds will do fine in the hothouse the rest of the imported ones from rps. All are in styrofoam box’s with lids, coco coir perlite mix fine grade just ever so lightly moist. The seeds where lightly pushed into the mix then lightly covered 0.5mm for the bigger seeds and for the smaller seeds they where covered 0.2mm or near enough for both coverings of the seeds. Time will tell how successful it is this little science project is that’s slowly turning into a mad scientist laboratory.

A few home grown lytocarum seeds from a nice palm in the garden. The last 4 years the palm has had good seed set of a large size, this year the seeds where small. So I think she’s a bit tierd  of seed producing and having a rest this season with just a small batch of seeds. And the vonitra seeds  were a gift from Tim brissy a nice  gesture of some seeds . Seeing as customs destroyed my shipment of seeds it was nice of Tim to offer a few seeds thanks Tim.🌱

A nice gesture of good will from Colin Wilson in gifting me these palm seeds. Some real nice garden winners in there for all types of gardens. Thank you Colin for the seeds they shall be grown with love and all care for future generations. Bottom heating at 30 degrees Celsius will be used for all the seeds in coco coir perlite mix of a fine grade. And as usual iam running out of propagation room with so many varieties on the go. Just another mad science project growing in the mind.

I was gifted some iriatia deltoidea seeds. The species has survived two winters in my hothouse, and one planted in the ground this spring time will tell if they are to live in the garden next winter. Hopefully the ones I germinate will have  some cool tolerance being germinated in the subtropical climate. Bottom heating coco coir perlite mix the temperature will be set at 30 degrees Celsius, with the soil  starting out at 24.3 degrees Celsius a couple of days should see the temperature increase to 30. An interesting palm to grow so far with its stilt roots even the ones in containers having stilt roots as small palms.

A nice little batch of seeds arrived today. This lot should keep me pretty busy if all goes according to plan (the best laid plans of mice and men can go astray) I will have a couple of palms to pot up. All the seeds arrived fresh and looking good straight through customs within 5 days not to bad considering the rate at which customs work. So now all I have to do is wa a few months to see what happens. The lanonia dasyantha had started to germinate so not to bad iam happy with that. And as for therapist to try and cure my addiction I wouldn’t bother I don’t won’t a cure.

Hi Harry I only order seeds just so you can say I have never seen or heard of that one just to keep you on your toes. But yes a bit of work over the next half a year.

best way to do that lol it took me a little bit to get the flesh off. Yeah i thought i would have to take it off (Mold, and the flesh stopping germination till it rots)

Get a 5 gallon bucket, put water in it- 3 or 4 inches worth. Dump seeds in. Get drill, connect round/ disk metal brush attachment plus extensions because the drill won't fit in the bucket. Turn on drill, try not to get wet. Enjoy fruitless seeds after a few minutes of drilling.

Hydrogen peroxide bath for seeds after.

Enjoy!

Good score a 100 or so. Yes remove the flesh, you can soak them in water to rot the flesh away or you can use a small power wash (jet wash) to blast the flesh away. The jet wash only takes a couple of minutes, you will need a small wire cage or something like that. But yes remove the flesh using whatever method you prefer.

A lovely gift of 30 licuala cordata seeds. Picked on 9/2/25 so super fresh. It will be interesting to see how they grow in my climate being acclimated upon germinating so a little cool tolerance from the start. Somehow I think it will be quite a few years before they are big enough to plant out if they make it through the winters. IMG_4987.thumb.jpeg.daa9248d82b129fe072eb35e3085b8fa.jpeg

Try lanonia dasyatha iam sure it will grow for you, or lanonia magalonii both very similar to licuala species. Or licuala pelata could be worth a try.
