true Redneck Palm first ring of trunk (C. lastellianus)

Just pulled off a leaf base this morning and noticed the first ring!!  Tree is about 16-17ft overall.  Zone 10b.

Was bought as a Floribunda 1 gallon around 2019.

Does anyone in South FL have a Redneck with trunk. The true C. lastellianus seems pretty rare here...all you see are C. leptocheilos

I’ll second what Tom says. Beautiful palm JD! I’ve had one for many years (maybe 10?) in a semi-protected raised planter and I’m very proud to say it opened 2 leaves this year and is all of chest high. So, basically it dislikes it here, but not enough to cark. I’m oddly impressed by its resilience. :) My hope is that it slowly speeds up; they are indeed beautiful palms.

Pics!?

Give it time...it will become a nice palm.  I find they are very thirsty and hungry so give it lots of water and fertilizer.  It's only a little slower than C. leptocheilos so i don't know why more ppl don't grow them here.  It's prob my favorite Dypsis. Hoping mine flowers soon so i can make hybrids.

Well, JD, here it is in all its glory… here in a Mediterranean environment there’s a huge difference between these and leptichielos speed-wise. Hoping it does pick up a bit of speed as it gets a bit bigger at the base!

Here’s my 15-year-old teddy bear for comparison. A few years older to be sure, but probably 18 feet of clear trunk.

Not that I've ever seen. Been there half a dozen times..

Possibly Montgomery Botanical? I've only been there once cause it's a research facility

Looks pretty good!  It's def one of the more tropical Dypsis/Chrysalidocarpus.  There are a few nice ones in SoCal gardens about your size but none trunking i don't think.  I don't think collectors in FL "got the memo" on this one...cause i never see them here.  Dypsis just aren't as popular here in South FL in general. And many don't grow well on the East Coast on account if their soil.

Let us know if this guy still there

Cool.  I'll check. I'll be there in 2 weeks for the Palm Society Plant Sale. The last palm i looked for (that was listed on their plant directory) was Veitchia vitiensis and it was no longer there.
