We always have the same problem.

First it is growing well and then weeks later....

What can we do?

Damping off! Use a very freely draining medium, provide light and root warmth and water every day! Use a heated pad and artificial lighting, in case of need. Look how I take care of the Hyphaena seedlings, the thebaica is pushing up third leaf. Hyphaena is quite tender than Phoebix dactylifera.

I only once germinated seeds indoors in the winter, near the radiator. The seeds germinated, but the seedlings were weak. As soon as it started to get warmer, I took them outside. The seedlings were very weak and they all died. Since then, I have been germinating everything outside. We have our Mediterranean summer and the seeds germinate on their own from May to the end of October.

I just started mixing orchid mix with perlite and potting soil , the mix seems to be a bit better than just potting soil and perlite , although the original soil worked well , I think the orchid mix adds more texture and drainage. Harry

Mazat, there is a ready special cactus mix from Seramis. It includes Seramis clay aggregate mixed with very finely granulated lava rock. I would first use germination soil or perlite for the germination and then transplant right away germinated seeds in to such a medium.

With your good climate, this is a good solution 🤗, Gyuseppe

I've grown dacty's from seed and I agree with the above. Im also convinced that they like to have some sand in the soil.
