The leaves can be big and heavy. Here’s one of my baueri.

I usually saw off a frond when it’s yellowing on all of my Rhopalostylis.  The boot hangs on a little longer that way giving it some time to dry out a bit and lessening its weight some. Dave, you’re right, they’re HEAVY otherwise.

Time spent growing palms is great , whether in the ground or pot! Very nice job, it is a bit more challenging in a pot. Harry

Try it in the ground! I'll bet it'll do great in Greece!

My great friends and gentlemen can still climb your stairs. The strength and beauty of your beautiful years are still there. I will follow you with my younger age, but I still struggle to climb a staircase. Gentlemen who love your beautiful palm trees. They are already reaching the understanding of your years and wisdom, beautifying your noble hearts. And you still laugh at how healthy they are. They are healthier than a beautiful palm tree in your garden.

It will be many years before my R. Bauri Cheesmania is big enough to be a problem.  Harry77216503239__86C8BC11-4955-4CD3-98C0-6F3ABE352A7F.thumb.jpeg.90f69be32d7b84c63e229bc0d8b4e0f3.jpeg

‘This was taken this last summer , right after a new frond opened . Now it is near opening another frond. (Already!) I have had it a bit over a year . From @DoomsDave . They do grow fairly fast. Harry

For a bit of perspective on speed of growth for these . This was after getting home from my first trip to @DoomsDave . It had somehow gotten loose in its pot from the trip home . I kept it in a shady spot under our pergola for a week or so and it stood straight up and got a solid footing all on its own. I knew , at that point , these are fast growing palms. Compare with the photo above and keep in mind , a fairly recently planted small palm. It is in mostly shade as I am inland a bit and it can get quite warm here . A much stronger grower than R. Sapida in warm climates . HarryIMG_0336.thumb.jpeg.192d228b33d9caa4b5618d3fcf73f1a0.jpeg

It is now on its third new frond since this pic!

They resemble bottle palms (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) when they are a little larger.

I am going to be 71 in a bit over a week. I still get up on a ladder but only if absolutely necessary and no more than 8’! I have a pole saw and a tree service. Harry

Yes, Harry, you have to be careful, my friend. Heights are very dangerous.

To demonstrate @Jim in Los Altos technique. This is a month or so ago . My Roystonia Oleracae . The frond was about done . A little work with a pole saw and the dying frond was cut . A while later the leaf base had dried out and came down without damage to any neighboring palms ….or humans! HarryIMG_1003.thumb.jpeg.116101f558599799d4888317eb8e7fbf.jpeg

Well , it may be young but not tiny! That is gorgeous and already flowering. Good job. Prudent to trim one that size before allowing it to self clean . Harry

These have heavy leaves for sure. before drying out  The good part is that they dont look too tall.  Falling from 30' height would be devastating.  For some reason my large roystoneas that drop leaves from 30'+ rarely drop as "wet" leaves.   In hurricanes they tend to snap at the petiole/crownshaft area.  But when they do fall from on high, anything under them is going to get whumped.  The sound of a huge leaf/crownshaft hitting ground can be a couple hundred feet away.    Some of these rhapalostylus and dypsis grown out west and in Hawaii look to have some impressively heavy crownshafts.
