Very basic palm production, low cost

I have a mate who lives out in bush with very little water and only solar power. And over the years I have been influencing palms on him. Today I got see his set, and let’s say very basic low budget, but you know what it works. He was saying the chickens ate his bangalows, but at least he has an interest in palms. The plastic bag was just filled up with sand from his property and just sat there near the chicken pen. I will say his Livistona are looking pretty good along with his Bangalows in the pots.

Yes not to bad I thought, once he gets them in the ground they will be looking good, a palm is a palm after all, you don’t need a mega setup just a love for plants!

My Chatham Island Rhopalostylis seeds are just starting to sprout and earlier in the year I germinated a batch of Cyrtostachys renda, the first seeds I have germinated for about 15 years ! Used my very high tech method of course,  a Tupperware lunch box !!

My mum said to me if you find something in life you’re good at stick with it. It appears you have found something in life your good at! The good old Tupperware container comes in handy. Just like the beetroot one and the lettuce container.

I got six pack containers from the nursery for free and found a Tupperware typ box that they fit in , drilled holes for ventilation. We’ll see if it works but it looks good to me . I just checked on a batch of seeds yesterday and only had to add a bit of water after a week . The plastic “home” helps keep them moist for an extended time without fussing. ‘It should work ! I have a dozen Decipiens seeds brewing in this contraption . Note the greenhouse effect . Where the parent palm is , they sprout up on their own ( volunteers ) . Some species really don’t require anything but patience . It took almost a year for my Bungalows to sprout and almost 100% germination rate . I had little 3” pots that some flowers came in , filled them with potting soil and perlite, kept them damp under one of my P. Roebelini, and bingo!
I really don’t have much room so I just place the potted seeds under the other palms in the garden . No heat , just Mother Nature and a bit of water.

That little science project you have there will snowball Harry. And the next thing you know boom hundreds of containers and seedlings all over the, the wife starts complaining about the soil in the house, she wants cooler box for next game of golf for drinks with girls, the back patio becomes a nursery and the dog continues to knock over all the containers in pursuit of the ball being thrown. I do like your setup I started out  indoors but with one of those storage tubs full of Tupperware containers. Now it’s a mad scientist thing that I will grafting palms together to create some sort of Frankenstein palm that eygor or is it Igor……..

That’s what I’m afraid of Richard! You know me all too well. Or is it that we came from the same planet? Harry

Wait until you get some rare seeds and they keep on coming in. Planet Claire from the B52s  I do believe. Or is it Ziggy stardust life in Mars.

Hell yeah! I'm all about the low buck low tech stuff. These look great and they make my setup look like NASA by comparison. I love it.
