2025/2026 Winter

I was still a kid and lived on Long Island, NY during that time but do remember getting some nasty winter storms. As a kid it was great haha but as an adult I'm sure it caused a lot of headaches.

Also, sometime around 2008-10 I believe we had some epic winter storms around the Philly area. I remember walking along a path and was able to stick my arms and rest them on the snow because it was so high. I don't remember the exact dates but we had two or three major winter storms in a very short period of time.

The Philadelphia area is weird. I experienced at least one winter with over 100" of snow if I'm not mistaken and yet there are other winters where hardly any snow falls (I believe one year had less than 1").

Another problem is the area occasionally gets random warm weather in the 60s and even low 70s in late February which takes a big toll on sensitive vegetation. Everything starts waking up and gets ready to bloom only to get destroyed by another deep freeze.

We always get random winter days here in Pennsylvania that are in the 60s. I've also noticed late February typically the last week it's always in the 70s and high 60s And then comes the first week or couple days in March we get a freeze it's weird. People always talk about the Midwest having Weird temperature swings but I've also noticed that for us in Pennsylvania lol. Also 2023 February our average temperature for that month was about 60 degrees so that was kind of weird lol

Yeah 100% I can tell a big difference from being up there and then coming down to where I live in needmore Most of the time we're at least five degrees warmer in my area than the  Juniata area. What was the climate like, Like how different was it?

Comparison with the Bald Knob Summit area:

  • The trees in your area get leaves 2-4 weeks earlier and keep them 2-4 weeks later.  This demonstrates that it stops freezing earlier and starts freezing later.  That's typical for a change in elevation of 2,000 ft.+
  • Your summers are much hotter.  There were plenty of times it was in the 70s at the house and I'd go down to the swimming hole on the Juniata and it was in the mid-80s.
  • There was one instance where a friend from Florida stopped up for a visit and it was in the 50s at the house.  I suggested we head to Bedford county to at least get a few more degrees, and when we got there it was in the 70s and people were getting ready to go in the water.
  • From your area over to Philly, you tend to get the snowstorms that blow moisture in from the Atlantic rather than the fronts that come over Lake Erie.  In our case, it didn't matter which way the storms came - we were getting it.

I've noticed that with the leaves this was probably around early April 2025 our trees were just starting to leaf out Some already had their leaves mostly the invasive honeysuckle. And going up 70 getting near Breezewood most of the trees didn't even start leafing out yet. It's so cool how one area is so different to another That are pretty close to each other

I once drove through the mountains on a trip from Cincinnati Ohio to the Harrisburg PA area in the first week of May. Trees were green to start the trip. Then in Somerset area everything was still brown. Didn’t green back up again till past Bedford.

I've been in the Somerset area a couple times and it's very much noticeably a lot colder than us They get a lot more snow than us being surrounded by mountains

I 100% agree with this I have noticed in the past couple years that the weather apps are never accurate and it's getting really annoying I always have to wait the day of the weather to make sure if it's right. Here's the article I'll put it on here if you don't have facebook

Yep. I have a friend in NC and it's 12"+ and STILL snowing. I'm sure they are not equipped for that kind of snow.

I'm cold.

But nothing compared to what's going on further east. A friend in NJ is waking up to single digit temps, and apparently they've had so much snow they load it in dump trucks and take it to machines that melt it. We've just gotten frost and the cats water dishes freezing over and single digit wind chills, and I'm still in jorts and slides because.... It's just how I get down.

Yikes. You still have a day of 20F followed by a night of 10F next Saturday, looking at that.

I live in an inland frost pocket at 51N latitude with no urban heat island and my coldest day since I started growing palms in 2016-17 was like 29F. My coldest night that I have recorded was maybe 13-14F. So you will still be significantly colder than that next weekend still.

Have you had to protect Sabal Minor where you are even? Also what is your lowest temp so far during this event?

I started growing palms in 2022, and from 2022 to 2024 we had normal winters nothing needed protection. However, the last two winters have been extremely harsh. I’ve had to protect even Sabal minor, and one of mine was nearly completely defoliated last year. I  also live in a frost pocket, where temperatures typically are 2–3°F colder than surrounding areas, and sometimes as much as 5°F colder. So far this winter we’ve recorded a low of -10°F, which is exceptionally cold for this area. This wasn’t just isolated to my property eitherlocal weather stations recorded lows of -8°F, -6°F, -4°F, and -2°F. Some nearby towns only dipped into the low single digits, likely due to the urban heat island effect and being next to water.
