Any dig and move Hedyscepe ?

Featured Replies

I’ve got a couple in the yard that will need to be dug and moved.

Anyone ever do it? Any thought, caveats, pointers etc?

Great question, top 10 palm fave for me, top five of those I can grow.

It's not one I've ever been fortunate enough to have so I don't have any experience. However this type of undertaking I've always had digs go more successfully with prior soaking with a kelp product, some auxinone and Bacillus Subtillis or similar.

My guess Dave treat the same as Howea, except more gentle hands!

I've moved a couple of smaller ones, probably only knee high despite having been in my crappy dry sand for a couple of years. No probs but I'd do it in cooler weather if possible.

South Arm, Tasmania, Australia - 42° South

Mild oceanic climate, with coastal exposure.

Summer: 12°C (53°F) average min, to 21°C (70°F) average daily max. Up to 40°C (104°F max) rarely.

Winter: 6°C (43°F) average min, to 13°C (55°F) average daily max. Down to 0°C (32°F) occasionally, some light frost.

I personally think theyd  be more like a Rhopalostylis to move having a tillering root. If they’ve got any trunk I’d be taking the biggest scoop of soil your equipment can physically lift.

Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

Rhopies also move pretty easily when they're small, ie pre trunking. I've probably dug up twenty, preparing for the move to the new garden. Trunking sized I'm sure could be a different kettle of fish.

One day I'll post a list of all the palms I've dug up and moved, so it can be entered in the permanent record books of absolute gardening stupidity!

I would say that’s a beauty even in its present state. Are you planning on moving it to a shadier spot? Harry

Shes a nice palm. How long has it been growing in that spot?

Even if its been growing in that spot for a couple years, it should still kinda pop out of the hole. I've' done a couple.  Just make sure you start digging deep a few feet away in a circle from the base.  Also soak the ground in water prior to digging, I find palms come out safer when the ground is wet. Good luck.

The plan is to dig, pot and rehome to someone near the beach.

Oh , I would think there would be a shady spot to plant at your place but if it is needing the cool coastal climate that’s a good plan. Harry

I guess I could take it... only 2 hours from the beach... yearly mild temp of 100 in our summers 🤪😜 @DoomsDave
