Yes, Peachy. I felt the same way until yesterday.
I've been there several times, but I had never seen it before. Besides, yesterday was ideal, it was over 30 degrees Celsius and everyone was at the swimming pool, or at least most of them.
Sabine had to work and I felt more like looking at plants than dealing with lots of beach towels and people in a confined space...

although I usually enjoy being around people ...

I looked up where St Gallen is on Google and learnt something else entirely.  I had heard of Lake Constance but never knew exactly where it was. It is also known as Bodensee,  now I knew where that was, I have even seen it !

I never like being around too many people and would never use a pool somebody strange was using. To me it would be like some person using my bath before me. 😬

St. Gallen is a beautiful, relatively small city (large by our standards) located at a high altitude. It also has a number of attractions to suit every taste. The climate is continental with four seasons and plenty of rain. It is rather cool compared to the area around Lake Constance, and much cooler throughout the year.

Exactly, Peachy. That's unpleasant.
So today I'm going to take a dip in Lake Constance in the evening. The school holidays are over and there are far fewer people where we go swimming.
The bath I mentioned would have been a swimming pool, and yes, Lake Constance is much more pleasant.

I have one in my greenhouse and it’s doing fine in the cool weather, one plant I have always wanted in my garden!

Great, Richard, that you have one.

The gardener I know gave me a small specimen once. This time he wasn't there and I don't help myself, that would be rude.
The one he gave me didn't make it indoors, but that was about five years ago.
And I'm not sure if it will survive outside on the balcony, because when it gets really cold, the temperature can still drop below 0 degrees Celsius a few times, not for long, but still...
But it has fascinated me for a long time.

It has always been the plant that I wanted due to the palm look it has, often when I was a young gardener I would see it in books and want to grow one, but they are rare to find one in my area, try to grow one for yourself and in the really cold nights bring it indoors, my one gets temperatures around 2 degrees Celsius a few times a year.

Okay, Richard. As soon as I see him again, the gardener I know, I'll ask him if he can give me another seedling. It would probably be best to do it as soon as possible, because it's still warm...
That would be great, of course.
I'll do it the way you explained. Thank you very much for your explanations and informations, Richard.

That would be one of the little ones I photographed in the last picture. Interestingly, these little ones have been stuck in my head ever since, literally.

Visualized and hopefully soon with me... with us. Sabine also likes this type very much.

This is in the wrong forum, it's not a palm but a part of family Cyclanthaceae. Had a couple of Carludovica palmata but unfortunately animals like them and ended up eating them down to the ground. Since then haven't seen any for sale anywhere. Cyclanthaceae have a number of very interesting species. All three species I had of them were very edible.
