W is for Welfia and Wallachia and…

Featured Replies

I happen to have a Wallichia across from some Wettinias close to my house.

I am guessing many PT readers have at least one palm whose genus begins with the letter W.

I will begin posting mine, but I am counting on you to help fill in the rest.

Wettinia hirsuta is first. IMG_1225.thumb.jpeg.15c63701301ad998a9c25e4a244640ee.jpeg

Here’s my only Wallichia marianniae.

I do have other Wallichia and Wettinia spp as yet to be recently photographed so stay tuned.

Next is my only Welfia regia whose new red leaf is beautiful, but fades to green quickly.

I do wish I had more of these.

Too dark for more photos today, but I’ll add them as I can and look forward to seeing yours!

I'll let someone with better looking examples than mine post their Washies.

I do believe you have a wallichia densifolia already. I should have seeds available soon from my one,

And of course I will say wodyetia bifurcata, as no one else has yet!

Cindy, the red may fade quickly, but the green tree is most handsome,  we saw this palm on a past IPS Biennial to Costa Rica.

Richard beat me to it but here's my Wodyetia.  I have all the species in this genus!  😆rsz_img_20250522_144150010_hdr.thumb.jpg.35d3c2d2fef76288732f233603926ece.jpg

Mine's still a long way from flowering like yours but at least it's a "full Monty" shot of the entire palm!  :)

You choose a hard letter not many W palms out there. I do remember those days  for letter of the day on Sesame Street oh the Cookie Monster was the best!

Another beautiful palm, they do need an open spot to be fully enjoyed. It’s amazing how in some places they set seeds absolutely loaded to the hilt, yet in my climate i may get up to 50 seeds only at a time, its definitely a heat humidity thing that helps seeds set in abundance, or the pollinater insects play a big role in certain countries.

Foxtails (Wodyetia bifurcata) grow very well in Puerto Rico-fast too.

The landscaping nurseries do have these for sale and they are in the highway medians even in groupings of 2-4.

These are my largest ones, but I have 5 more elsewhere.
Lots of seed so I may grow up some more.

I don’t recall seeing any hurt by hurricanes here either, but did have one youngster killed by an ox beetle.

No Wallichia "flat palm" fotos? Wodyetias now that is a genus that has just exploded in (well-deserved) popularity!

They can be seen all over the world, no? Unheard of before the 1980s💜✌️😅🌴

I'd like to have as many palm trees as possible. But I still have a lot left to collect.

IMG_1555.thumb.jpeg.f2e7f935fad03270c5ee97c8e6e3e60c.jpeg

I have another in lots of shade that is larger and prettier but harder to photograph. Both have been repetitively attacked by ox rhino beetle and the pictured palm looked like a goner for awhile.

When the Strategus rhino beetles dig a gallery they go through roots and then with a palm on a slope they can’t stay anchored upright very well.

With wind and rain and gravity the palm shown here had to be staked and still would be vulnerable in the future, but at least no longer wobbles when I touch the stem.

It really is nearly flat (distichous) but my photos don’t emphasize that.

Nice palms growing to perfection in your climate. My disticha has flowered about 4 times starting from the top working there way down. Now it’s in decline taking its time to die and it’s around 25 years old. And a very distinct distichous appearance. Luckily I have planted a few more and have about 50 seedlings growing.
