Three new arecas not fussed by winter in the garden

Featured Replies

First up a little Areca tonku then Areca loaensis and lastly vidaliana. All new to the collection and there first winter in the ground and they are all doing quite well. They spent one winter in the greenhouse and then planted in the garden. So it’s good to see some new arecas in the cool winter of a subtropical climate you just never know until you try and try I did!

Homey I feel almost like I'm in caveman palm land here. You're putting out all of this exotic and cool stuff and with exception of a couple Trachys, a Butia, and some Sabal Minors I see nothing around here. I don't know if I need to try to establish a Mississippi chapter of palm nerds, I dunno if I need to look for a gardening club or what but most of what people grow here is uh... Cows. Lots of cows.

Oh don’t worry those tropical growers in Hawaii  make me look like iam living in a desert. They throw there palms from there porch step, just to  plant them and they grow just by looking at them! We got plenty of cows around here it’s your climate that dictates what you can grow in the tropical palm department.

@happypalms any seeds my friend?

Yep. That's why so many of mine are in the bedroom. Half of them would get cooked in the summer and the other half would get cooked in the winter.

Indoor growing can be tricky. You need the right amount of humidity, warmth is usually not a problem , light can be limited at times. Have you tried to grow a mapu indoors yet that one will challenge you?

It's definitely a pain in the ass sometimes. This one wants lots of bright light, this one wants shade, this one wants to stay wet, this one just wants to be misted, etc. No Mapu but I have a couple Spinosa I've managed to not kill. It'd be easier if we all just lived in Hawaii and could just put whatever in the ground and watch it take off and drink rum out of coconuts.

Oh those lucky Hawaii growers got it going on. Look at there palms and they grow! I have thousands of palms outside and not one indoors. My wife wanted a indoor plant and she threatened to go to a large commercial chain store and buy one, I said what for I got thousands outside of all sorts of tropical exotics and you want some generic boring chain store plant, go figure!

Indoor plants are cool. A little light, mist them, throw a layer of LECA on top of the soil if you get the bugs, or pour some h202 on the soil - they really add life to a room. But you've got way better choices than big box stuff outside.

The bigger decision I have to make with indoor plants is which one to put indoors! So I dont bother with indoor growing. And the biggest decision I have to make outdoors is what do I want to plant when there all so special, I want them all in view of my house or driveway!

If it'll survive our winters, I'll eventually get it in the ground. If it won't, I can look at it from my recliner. But I'm a much smaller operation than what you've got going on down there.

You should be growing a lot of your seedlings inside until they get a little bigger than pot them up and grow them outside, then plant them in the ground. There are plants of cold hardy palms out there!

August 1st; the worst of winter is likely behind now. ☃️

I hope so, although today doesn’t feel like it they say 7 states of Australia are up for snow this weekend. She’s a cold wet wind outside today!

I think the Bermudana are ready, they're mostly on their 5th strap leaf and rootbound now. And I did plant the Etonia from @teddytn already - it's small but it's in a protected corner against the east side of the house. I just haven't felt like doing anything the past few days.

You will get there, I have a greenhouse full of plants, it takes time to plant out correctly and plan for the future!
