Livistona chinensis TWINS

when you plant certain palms as a double or triple, do each of them typically grow at a different rate or do they shoot up and have similar heights?

I have a number of Livistona chinensis on my property that was planted as doubles years ago.  Each pair have very different grow rate.  I would say the most extreme one is a double where one where the top of trunk is 5 feet from the ground and the other one is 14' from the ground.  It's like one is dominant the other took the back seat.

What is interesting is the tall one is always the one closer to the east.  Coincidence?

I've got some seeds starting to sprout. I'll post my results in like 15 years or so.

I have a pair of Phoenix dactylifera. Original trunk failed but put up these 2 sprouts which are almost like twins.🤷‍♂️

I have a few multiples too and each one grows at a different rate despite being similarly sized when juveniles.

The female 'zahidi' pair are about 25 years old. Easily produce over 100 pounds of dates per year if I let them. This is the first year I removed the flowers,as we are still working on eating dates produced over the last 2 years 🤷‍♂️😄

Nice!  I just planted a 'zahidi' that I grew from seed.  Probably a male though.

@miamicuse, I think that doubles/triples are created from seedlings from the same seed batch and individuals usually grow at different rates anyway.  Multiples have to complete with each other for water, nutrients and sometimes light so the one getting the optimal combination is likely to grow faster.  Scott's twin Phoenix suckers are an exception (not grown from seed) but still one is just slightly faster than the other.

The only ones I have ever seen that grow close to the same rate are a pair of mules that are actually twins 3 off the same seed! Pretty hard to see in the jungle and not the best light!
