Transplanted Washingtonias Thriving

Not sure if anyone remembers or cares but I had these palms delivered in late february and repotted them, waited a couple months and stuck them in the ground. They are indeed doing well, not even showing any sign of shock from going from the repot to the ground within short time period. The fronds are bit rustled from the strong winds but still look great. I added the volcanic rock to add thermal mass and they are also next to the pool with the concrete patio so fingers crossed they will survive my zone 8B winters in Augusta, GA. Thanks everyone for the advice on here I love you all. Just sharing some photos of these beauties. Want this backyard to look like a tropical resort after given some time, look inspired by the views of Miami FL and Myrtle Beach SC.

Looking great! Hopefully you’ll post more photos as they fill in and grow!  I’ve planted a few Mexican Fans close to my pool as well and they are growing gangbusters.  They’re a bit closer to my pool than yours are but I had a large Cali Fan Palm I didn’t want them too close to, also I was hoping they would kind of bend and grow over the pool for a bit more shade.  They were 1 gallon size 2 years ago, now they’re taller than I am.

Im sure yours will grow quickly as well.

thanks I will definitely post the pictures of them over time also, I love the way yours look. You can probably tell the fronds on the ones I have are extended because they grew them in a lack or sunlight. I like the bend idea though because I planted mine at slight bent angles just to get that tropical appearance. All would be well with mine as long as the weather doesn’t kill them in the winter man haha. Hopefully the winter doesn’t kill them and they turn my backyard into a resort,

Look Good!

Potting them for a couple of months was a smart move. Are there still mature ones up on Washington Rd. north of I20?

Thanks but honestly I never saw any on Washington Rd north of I20, I have only seen sabal palmettos on the Martinez-Augusta side and trachycarpus fortunei on the Evans side of Washington Rd. I don’t know if they were there previously because I never had an eye out for it until I learned about palms more recently. I have seen some mature ones on Gordon Highway right almost where it intersects with Laney Walker Blvd. I have also seen some in peoples’ front and backyards but not that many.

This is almost irrelevant but while I was in Myrtle Beach earlier this week I noticed a beautiful assortment of Washingtonias amongst the sabal palmetto decorated area. I’ve already seen these while here last time but this time I really noticed that there were more at this place than I thought. I’m thinking the thermal mass from this giant pyramid might be part of the reason they are doing so well. Myrtle Beach is also an 8B but check out these beauties if you’re interested, there isn’t very many in that area but I personally think they actually look a lot nicer than the sabals do.
