Transplanted 33 yr old Euorpean Fan

Featured Replies

Hello to all, I bought a farm raised 5 stem specimen Euorpean Fan, the installation went well , 6 weeks ago, water it daily for 4 weeks, now I'm down do twice a week,all stems have new growth, however the center stem seems now to have brownish dead tips on the existing fronds , not the new growth. Sould I mix some powered sulpher and pour a few gals around the base ? I don't want to loose this, it was VERY expensive. I will say I did have 3 or 4 tiny 4 " pups and was told to take a small wood paddle it in a drill and go down the center of the pup to eliminate it, now I'm wondering if a fungus might have set in . Or possibly maybe a little too much water ? Remember the other4stems are flawless and all have new growth...2nd photo is today,1st photo was Weeks ago

Thank yous all in advance for any advice....

Looks like standard transplant shock. Especially when a plant has been rooted in the ground for so long, losing large chunks of its root system will be bound to manifest some stress. As long as the spears keep pushing healthy I wouldn’t worry. And personally, at least for now, don’t kill the pups until you’re sure the rest of the clump will survive.

Thank you very much ... Can it hurt the palm to do a Powered sulpher soak to the root system,? I read 1 tbsp per gal. So in this case 4 or 5 gals..... Never used Sulpher on a palm....

Thank you in advance.......

I would just keep it watered . Let it settle in for a while . I have never done any fertilizer or sulphure whatever to mine , just water and sun . It looks good to me for a transplant. Harry

@ken hammer welcome to Palmtalk!

I haven't heard of sulfur for new transplants before.  I suppose if the soil is really high pH that might help, but generally you don't want to add fertilizer or other "stuff" to a new transplant.  Palms will "eat" the old fronds for nutrients, so don't cut old fronds off until they aee brown and dessicated.  Adding a bit of diluted liquid fertilizer a month after transplant or a bit of granular palm type fertilizer is ok.

I would definitely not cut off any pups or mess with it for at least 6 months.  Let it grow in and get settled before doing anything to it.

I would not really be doing that after transferring it, yes it is used to control fungus and mites and insects.
