Doing the chamaedorea adscendens rounds

Featured Replies

That time of the year again, going around the garden checking on adscendens flowering. I know by now who the boys and girls are and where they are located with 50 mature plants. Male pollen collection is the key, it seems the girls are always ready but the boys need close attention for that one day of pollen shedding. So with the plants flowering it’s nearly time to collect last years hand pollinated seeds. Iam just leaving them for good measure and to fully ripen. I should go close to 500 seeds this season if iam lucky.

Richard, I already knew that you had to send me these seeds, but I wanted to let everyone know what kind of person you are. You have only known me for a few months and you sent me the seeds. Few people would have done that and this is an honor for you, let's continue to do good, I have a cousin who is not very well, she has 8 nephews, and no one goes shopping for her and the morning after I help my brothers in their shop, I go to her and go do the shopping and other things she needs.

Nice round of fruit there . I think you do very well as the “ palm matchmaker “ . Is it me or does this have a strong resemblance to C. Microspadix ? (other than the black fruit ) Harry

Mine is happy. I had to buy it since I hadn't seen a post about these since like 2013 until recently. $7 eBay score! IMG_20250717_160108.thumb.jpg.ab950335e6a16f12ccd3760db8354744.jpg

Nearly all the Chamaedoreas here have fruit, even the house plants but I don't know how to be gender specific and only have one of each species. My big Teddy Bear grew bracts months ago and only now are things started to happen that could be seeds eventually. I have decided not to learn more about pollination etc as there is so much information about every topic on earth in my brain already that it is at risk of overloading.

And the best part is I ask for nothing in return, the same as you helping your cousin. Life is full off genuine people who are the same as yourself all around the globe. Traveling the globe I have met people with the same genuine honest feeling I have, just because they don’t speak English or they live halfway around the world doesn’t mean they are not loving caring people just the same as yourself. This is one joy you get from traveling that and the friendships that last a lifetime, oh and the food!

Yes the velvet look sheen on the leaf is similar, but the adscendan has thick leathery feel to it well leafy feel obviously. It must be cupids arrow that got me!

Richard , that is a wonderful idea. I am still in the dark with these Chamaedorea . I know I have both male and female due to all the viable seeds I get ( mostly Radicalis ) but no clue as to where the male are. Same with the bunches of Microspadix and a few Metallica. None of my Ernie’s are old enough yet.
Thank you for clarifying the comparison I made with your Adscendens . The pics aren’t able to show leaf thickness . My Microspadix are paper thin and burn easily but have that dusty green appearance unlike others with a shiny green finish. Harry

They don’t call them the velvet palm for no reason! Some people love small dypsis my love is small chamaedoreas. I have fully observed this little palm the adscendens. And have cracked there little secrets for seed production, knowing by colour and visual observation I can say it’s taken years to perfect it, truly horticulture at it’s best, too observe and study a palm is a joy!

They certainly are a beautiful little chameadorea

Iam pretty confident they will live indoors in winter, then back outside in the greenhouse. Or in the ground. There adorable palms.

I have got one outside in the shadehouse,  one in my entrance hall and one on the back patio. They seem to do well in all locations. They are still babies and their needs might change with age but to date they are doing well under the same situations as all my other Chamaedoreas.

There super cute and easy to grow, such an adorable palm when a baby plant. I just love them.
And quite tough and even mor3 beautiful as an adult palm.

I just noticed mine is pushing a new leaf already. The last one just opened up about 2 months ago.

They are a bit slow to reach maturity, but a nice medium paced palm with noticeable growth as juveniles. And tough so even what we would call John proof. 🌱
