Into each palm lover’s life, there’s bound to be a stump or stumps.

I’ve cut down a few over time and those stumps just beg to be removed.

This is from an Archontophoenix tuckeri that got removed a while back.

This one was relatively easy; the wood is soft, it’s half rotted and it came right out.

I have one out front from a large Howea F. that succumbed to the “Death Ray “ 2018 I think. I was out of town so not there to cool the root ball. Harry

I’d originally planted it to be an “over canopy” for the Chambeyronias. When it became clear the Chambeys wouldn’t need the cover I cut them down. Too much in the space.

I have a Syagrus that never kicked in but got tall so I had it cut down but left about 3-4 feet of stump. I then hollowed out the top and filled with soil and moss. It is now home to a Bromeliad! Harry

If they stay wet enough some stumps remove themselves, like this Archontophoenix which is the sibling of the one in the OP.

Rhopalostylis stumps are extremely hard and difficult to remove, even 18 months after termination.

Here’s where the stump in the OP was. This came out relatively easily as the wood was soft to start with and had been rotting a while.

There’s still a few roots left.

Good job , Dave . My plan for the Kentia stump out front is very similar . It died over 6 years ago so I’m hoping for a place to plant something else there. Harry

I’ll be curious to see how hard it is to remove. As my personal observations and @Darold Petty’s comments show, palm wood is highly variable as are the stump configurations.

So I see you didn’t go with my suggestion Dave and blow yourself up. Patience is a virtue I just let them rot away in my garden and then plant a tree in that spot. We have a rule at work in the blueberry’s if a plant dies in the spot it was planted we don’t replant in that same spot, many times we have only to have the newly planted plants die again.

Sometimes using those saws was pretty arduous.
