This picture was taken a few minutes ago from a webcam on the top of Mt Washington in New Hampshire . That big bowl is called Tuckerman's Ravine and it collects  a lot of blowing snow from October - May ,  so it takes a long time to melt away .

I hiked Mt Washington a couple times, spring and autumn. Autumn is better as springtime brings biting black flies.

In the spring, while there is still snow in the ravine, guys would bring skis so they could ski down it. No lift, so you have to hoof it back up to the top.

The longest ski " trail " I've ever skied was from the bottom of  Tuckerman's Ravine to the parking lot . I hate to admit it but I climbed to the top of Tuckerman's ravine with my skis and it was so steep that when I caught an edge I fell all the way to the bottom of the ravine  . My friends did fine and skied it again while I was happy to hang out at the bottom . Embarrassing !

Luckily the best skiing for me was still left for me with  that long ski to the parking lot . I skied there in April and it was a nice sunny day . The black flies weren't out yet then .

( I said that that webcam was at the top of Mt Washington but it is a webcam at the Wildcat ski area pointing towards Mt Washington  . )

I knew this was going to be Mt Washington before I opened the topic. I’ve hiked it once in July 2015.  No snow in sight that time but it was only 42 degrees F at the top when we got there. Thats like a cold January day where I’m from haha.
