The first winter losers brassiophoenix schumanii

Featured Replies

The first casualties of winter and it didnt take long for these guys to say forget it. I was having trouble with wet cold spots at first but that has progressed into complete  necrosis for some while a few others are holding up ok only with cold spots at the back of the tray. They come good in summer only to decline in the cold and this is there second winter so iam thinking it’s one variety that I won’t really try again. The palm gods have spoken you shall have none schumanii!

Yep that’s my conclusion I tried. They will live but not worth the trouble they struggle and look good for a month or two only to lure you back in. Then old man winter comes along and laughs at you for trying!

I remind myself that there are hundreds of species that grow well here and others in more challenging climates have it tougher. But I’ve just got a strong need to grow Geonoma in particular and they’re mostly heartbreakers.

They were purchased as bare root seedlings, my motto is if they cannot live as seedlings in a protected environment then they will struggle out in the garden. Iam not really into all that winter protection doing it every winter only to finally plant it in the garden and it dies the first winter after planting it out. Survival of the fittest is my motto. Also I have so many seedlings and to protect them all is virtually impossible. Some palms will live in the cool climates others will die regardless of what you do.
