Ran by the big orange box today while getting my windshield replaced (ugh).

And lo' and behold.... palms (and some neat ones too).

First up is the amazing-razzle-dazzle "CLUB BUSTER TROPICAL #12" LOL pretty large Cat Palms:

Then found a good sized 5 gallon Bottle Palm! (been wanting one of these this year).

Next up was a bit of a shocker!

Baby bottles, Baby Ladys, and Baby Latans!

So of course I had to come home with a baby red Latan, and Lady palm for $14.98.

Very cool. I have not seen the lady palms or the red latan at ours.  I would definitely pick up a red latan.

@TropicsEnjoyer - FWIW: When the pandemic hit all these little pop-up shops started buying BB store plants, removing the labels and reselling them online for 2X + their purchase price. I've noticed the same thing. They are all over etsy.

Nice. I went to Wally World the other day and they had those Costa majesties in those little decorative pots and they were just floating in water. I really wanted to go pull the nursery pots out and drain all of them. Those decorative pots have zero drainage. I ended up using mine as a bathroom trash can.

Awesome availability for your area. Here in my zone 10a , there is just a few common Pygmy , Queen , and King. We don’t even get Wodyetia anymore.
How are you planning to grow those in your area climate? A few of those are beyond a zone push for you. Harry

@Harry’s Palms?!?!?! FOXTAILS?!?!?! Whats up with that!?!?! They had Foxtails, Christmas, and Queens as well in this size below.

Why are we getting YOUR plants this year?

I think this is a "thing" this year. I have friends up north who had Heliconias in spring - we have NONE yet. Which is off track from recent years.

I stopped zone pushing years ago pretty much. Not worth it in the long run to me.

The lady, bottle, and Latan palm will remain potted for now.

I've been considering moving to the treasure and space coast in the next year (that or Costa Rica).  *flips coin*

Red Latan does well as a neglected houseplant too fwiw. Mine is slower than snail poop but it's consistent. Maybe it'll do better now that I'm paying attention to it again.

The Latania was $14.98? That’s a great price.

How much was it?  The only "interesting" palm our orange store carried last year was foxtail.  One smaller than that one was around $70-75.  Nothing interesting yet this year however.  But I did snag this foxtail from a local nursery for $40.

Yikes. I bought mine from a grower on Etsy for like $65.

@Fusca The foxtail I posted a picture (actually any of the palms in those pots) were $199

I'd guess 15 gallons?

@Johnny Palmseed Yep. All of the 1 gallons were 14.98

I think 10-gal but it looks almost exactly the same size as mine.  I guess the decorative pot really drives up the price!  Sounds like I got a pretty good deal.

Good Lord man, that's obscene. If I had some extra scratch I'd ask you to go snag a couple and ship them to me. It'd still be way cheaper than eBay or Etsy prices.

LOL Large tropical palms this far north will cost quite a lot more than down there. They always have. However, I have noticed that there is some MAJOR price jacking this year. I was at the big blue box last week and saw one of those patio planters with a cordyline, fern, and mandevilla in it for $179. That is beyond insane.

@JohnAndSancho FYI: Check your area and find the tier 1 BB stores. We have 3 HD's and Lowes within a 30 mile radius here - 1 is a Tier 1, 1 is a Tier 2, and 1 is a Tier 3. They all have varying degrees of "premium" material.

Tier 1 stores are going to have higher end plant material (More Palms, Tropicals, etc...) at least, this is how it works here.

Uhh we have one Lowe's the next county up, and there's an HD about 90 miles away. It's almost third world here.

Ugh. There's nothing in Meridian MS of interest. Some Chamerops and some Roebellini for like $84 in 5g size. A really pretty bromeliad though. IMG_20250709_105348.thumb.jpg.6793655419c73b95c436f7f1f027732a.jpg

How do I find what tier nearby stores are? I googled and didn't find anything helpful.

Very interesting there so many zone 10+ palms available that far north. There have been various Latania available in the box stores here but I have held off because the ones I’ve seen here seem to fall quick to lethal bronzing or some other pathogen.  🦠

My red one is doing well as a houseplant. It's slower than snail poop but it's consistent. I'm super jealous of the $15 1 gallon tropicals everyone else gets.

That’s a great deal but I have plenty, actually considering cutting a couple down. Harry

Tier = Property Value

Meaning the stores located near high property values and high income residences will have more premium planting material and broader selections.

Stores in major metro's near high demand real estate are highest tier. Lower tier are in outlying cities, or lower income area's.

Stores near the coast or nearest to beachfront or row 3 properties also tend to be high tier.

That's basically it unless you happen to work in corporate planning for BB stores.

Oh. Lol well this one is located in one of the poorest counties in the poorest state in the country so we're probably the worst of the worst.

Even Hattiesburg is a college town, so I don't see it being much better. And I don't know if the gentrified areas of Jackson are very palmy. And to make it even more fun, none of the cool in store stuff is listed online. On the orange store app, I found out of season Spindles when I searched the Miami area and when I searched San Diego area I found out of season Queens.

@SeanK $250 for that size is absolutely insane....

I just bought one here that same size for $89.98 in April. Which is also a triple.
