If the ground is damp already , pass. If it is dry to the touch , water. If you haven’t already , mulch around your palms . It will help break the crusty surface of clay soils . I monitor the moisture around my palms regularly and this time of year they get water every two days , more for the little ones. Harry

It’s pretty hard to over water windmills. Especially if they’ve been recently transplanted, they will need a lot of water to settle in..  Watch out for browning fronds or leaflets closing up.

They don’t need well draining soil and do just fine in mucky clay.

Don’t be surprised if the 3 footer surpasses the bigger one in a few years. I’d put money on it that it will. Buying a Trachy with 2’-4’ of trunk is really the sweet spot.  That big one may take up to 3 years to resume a normal growth rate.

I am trying to picture clay with good drainage. Are you sure the water is going right down to the roots or just keeping the surface damp ?  Anyhow,  in the warm to hot weather unless it rains heavily, I water my trachy every couple of days and in nearly 4 years it has never looked back.
